720p Video Converter

Shrink videos to 720p HD — 1280 × 720 or 720 × 1280 — for smaller files that still look sharp on phones.

Drop a video here or click to choose MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM or MKV · stays on your device

Runs entirely in your browser — videos are never uploaded. The video engine, Mediabunny (MPL-2.0), is downloaded once from a CDN and uses your browser’s own WebCodecs encoders.

Convert videos to 720p HD for smaller, easier files

720p — 1280 × 720 pixels for widescreen video — still looks sharp on a phone or a laptop yet produces files small enough to send, upload over mobile data or stream on a weak connection. This 720p video converter takes 4K, 1440p or 1080p footage down to HD, and turns vertical videos into 720 × 1280.

It keeps your video’s shape by default and sets the short side to 720 pixels; choose a “Full frame” option for an exact 1280 × 720 frame with bars, a blurred background or a crop. Conversion happens on your device with WebCodecs, using Mediabunny (MPL-2.0) to read and write the file, so nothing is uploaded.

How to use the 720p Video Converter

  1. Drop the video you want to shrink on the upload area.
  2. Leave Shape on “Keep the shape”, or choose a Full frame option for exactly 1280 × 720 (720 × 1280 for vertical video).
  3. Choose the format: MP4 · H.264 plays on every device; HEVC and AV1 make smaller files still.
  4. Pick a quality — “Medium” is often enough for 720p sharing — and decide whether to keep the sound.
  5. Press “Convert to 720p”, wait for the progress bar, check the size saving in the results and download.

720p Video Converter features

Big files made manageable

720p keeps 44% of the pixels of 1080p and just 11% of 4K, so files shrink dramatically.

Still sharp on small screens

720p fills a phone screen comfortably and plays smoothly on older laptops, tablets and TVs.

Vertical and square videos

The short side becomes 720 px, so phone videos come out as 720 × 1280 and square clips as 720 × 720.

Exact HD frame on demand

Bars, a blurred background or a crop give a true 1280 × 720 frame when an upload form demands it.

Size shown before and after

The results compare resolution and file size and show the percentage saved.

Private

The conversion runs entirely in the browser — no upload, no sign-up.

When 720p is the right choice

  • Sending by email or chat: many email services cap attachments at around 20–25 MB; a 720p re-encode of a short 1080p or 4K clip often fits where the original did not.
  • Uploading on mobile data: fewer megabytes mean quicker uploads and lower data use.
  • Older devices and TVs: 720p decodes easily on hardware that stutters with 4K or high-bitrate 1080p.
  • Courses, screen recordings and talking heads: slides and faces stay perfectly readable at 720p.

720p sizes for different shapes

“HD” on its own usually means 720p, while “Full HD” is 1080p. For Full HD use the 1080p video converter.

Getting the smallest good-looking file

Resolution is the biggest lever on file size, and the codec is the next. For the smallest 720p files choose MP4 · AV1 or HEVC if the people receiving the video have reasonably recent phones or computers; otherwise stay with H.264. The quality setting matters too: “Medium” works well for talking heads and screen recordings, while sport and fast action look better at “High”. Unticking “Keep the audio track” saves a little more when the sound is not needed. For even smaller results try 480p or 360p in the video resolution converter, or turn a short moment into an animation with video to GIF.

720p Video Converter FAQ

How do I convert a video to 720p?

Drop the video, keep “Keep the shape”, and press “Convert to 720p”. A 1920 × 1080 video becomes 1280 × 720; a vertical 1080 × 1920 video becomes 720 × 1280.

How much smaller will my video be at 720p?

It depends on the source and settings, but 720p has 44% of the pixels of 1080p and 11% of 4K, so the file is usually much smaller — the results panel shows the exact change.

Is 720p good enough quality?

For phones, tablets, laptops and most online sharing, yes. On a large TV viewed up close you will notice it is softer than 1080p or 4K.

What is the difference between 720p and 1080p?

720p is 1280 × 720 (HD); 1080p is 1920 × 1080 (Full HD) with 2.25 times as many pixels. 1080p is sharper on big screens; 720p makes smaller files.

Can I convert a 4K video to 720p?

Yes. Drop the 4K file and convert as normal — expect the job to take longer than with HD sources, because every 4K frame has to be decoded first.

Is the 720p video converter safe to use?

Yes. The video never leaves your device; decoding and encoding happen inside your browser.
