Change video resolution to any standard size
Video resolutions are named after the number of pixel rows: 1080p has 1,080, 720p has 720, and so on, with the “p” standing for progressive scan. This video resolution converter re-encodes a clip to 2160p (4K), 1440p, 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p or 240p. By default it keeps the video’s own shape and sets the short side to the number you choose, so a vertical phone video comes out correctly as 1080 × 1920 rather than squashed into a landscape frame.
If a platform or player expects an exact 16:9 frame, switch the shape to a “Full frame” option and choose bars, a blurred background or a crop to fill it. The converter runs in your browser with WebCodecs and Mediabunny (an MPL-2.0 library), shows a live preview, and never uploads your video.
How to use the Video Resolution Converter
- Drop a video on the upload area; the panel shows its current resolution, frame rate and codecs.
- Pick the Target resolution. A yellow badge warns you if the choice is larger than the original.
- Leave Shape on “Keep the shape”, or choose a Full frame option to get an exact 16:9 (or 9:16) size with bars, blur or a crop.
- Choose the format and quality. H.264 MP4 plays everywhere; HEVC and AV1 make smaller files for newer devices.
- Press “Convert resolution”, follow the progress bar, then compare Before and After and download.
Video Resolution Converter features
Seven standard resolutions
From 2160p (3840 × 2160) down to 240p (426 × 240), using the same widths video sites use for 16:9 footage.
Portrait-aware
The number sets the short side, so a vertical 1080p clip is 1080 × 1920 and a square one 1080 × 1080.
Honest upscaling warning
Choosing more pixels than the source has is allowed but flagged, because it cannot add real detail.
Exact frames when needed
Full frame options pad or crop to a true 16:9 size for TVs, editors and upload forms with strict rules.
Modern codecs
Save H.264, HEVC or AV1 in MP4, VP9 in WebM, or H.264 in MOV, depending on what your browser can encode.
No upload
All decoding and encoding happens on your device, and you can cancel at any time.
Standard video resolutions
Each step down removes a large share of the pixels — 720p keeps 44% of a 1080p frame — which is why lowering the resolution is the most effective way to shrink a video.
| Name | 16:9 size | Pixels per frame | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K UHD) | 3840 × 2160 | 8.3 million | Big TVs, archiving, high-end uploads |
| 1440p (QHD) | 2560 × 1440 | 3.7 million | Gaming, high-resolution monitors |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 1920 × 1080 | 2.1 million | The everyday standard for web and TV |
| 720p (HD) | 1280 × 720 | 0.9 million | Email, messaging, small screens |
| 480p (SD) | 854 × 480 | 0.4 million | Slow connections, older devices |
| 360p | 640 × 360 | 0.23 million | Previews, very small files |
| 240p | 426 × 240 | 0.1 million | Thumbnails and the tiniest files |
Why upscaling does not add detail
A 480p video holds about 0.4 million pixels of real picture information per frame. Converting it to 1080p creates 2.1 million pixels, but the extra ones are calculated by smoothly blending their neighbours — there is no new information to draw on. The result looks as soft as the original, only bigger, and the file grows. Upscale when a site or editor demands a minimum resolution; otherwise keep the original or go down.
AI upscalers guess at new detail with trained models. This converter uses ordinary high-quality scaling and does not pretend otherwise.
Choosing the right resolution
- Sharing in chats and email: 720p is a good balance of clarity and size; 480p if the file still needs to be smaller.
- YouTube and TVs: keep 1080p or higher if your source has it. The 1080p converter and the 4K video converter are tuned for those jobs.
- Old phones and slow networks: 360p plays smoothly almost anywhere.
- Exact sizes that are not standard (say 1000 × 500) are easier in the video resizer.
Video Resolution Converter FAQ
How do I change the resolution of a video?
Drop the video, choose a target resolution such as 720p, keep “Keep the shape” and press “Convert resolution”. When the bar reaches 100%, download the new file.
Does lowering the resolution reduce file size?
Usually by a lot, because there are far fewer pixels to encode and the quality setting chooses a bitrate to match the new size. A clip that was already very compressed may shrink less.
What is the difference between 1080p and 1080i?
The “p” means progressive — each frame is complete. The “i” means interlaced, where each picture carries alternate lines. Browsers and phones use progressive video, and this converter always produces progressive frames.
Why is 480p 854 pixels wide?
For a 16:9 picture, 480 × 16 ÷ 9 is 853.3, and video codecs need even numbers, so 854 is used. Likewise 240p is 426 pixels wide.
Can I convert a vertical video to 720p?
Yes. With “Keep the shape” a 1080 × 1920 phone video becomes 720 × 1280. Choose a Full frame option instead if you need a landscape 1280 × 720 frame.
Is my video uploaded by the video resolution converter?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebCodecs; nothing is sent to a server.
