A visa photo maker for online applications
Online visa forms check your photo’s pixels, shape and file size before anyone looks at your face. The US DS-160, for example, needs a square colour JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels and no larger than 240 kB; India’s e-Visa needs a square JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB. This visa photo maker crops your photo to the right shape, scales it to the right pixels and keeps the file inside the size limit — with a head-size guide so your face fills the frame correctly.
Requirements were checked against the official government pages listed below in 2025. Rules do change, so confirm them on the official site before submitting. The tool works entirely in your browser: your photo is never uploaded. It does not edit backgrounds, so start from a photo taken against a plain white or light wall, or whiten the background first with Change Background Color.
How to use the Visa Photo Maker
- Take a recent, straight-on photo against a plain white or off-white wall, in even light, without glasses.
- Drop the photo on the upload area and choose the visa — “US visa (DS-160) · 600 × 600 px” is selected first.
- Drag the photo and use Zoom until the top of your hair and your chin both sit inside the pink band between the two ovals.
- Check the green badges: square, pixel range, JPG and file size must all pass.
- Press “Download JPG” and upload the file in the application form.
Visa Photo Maker features
Official presets
US DS-160 at 600 × 600 or 1200 × 1200 px under 240 kB, and India e-Visa as a square JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB.
Head-size guide
For US photos, two ovals mark a head height of 50% and 69% of the image — the range the US Department of State specifies.
Automatic file-size control
Quality is lowered only as far as needed to stay under the limit, counting strictly so 240 kB means at most 240,000 bytes.
Pass/fail checks
Badges confirm the shape, pixel range, format and file size of the photo you are about to download.
Private
Your face, passport details and photo never leave your device.

Getting the head size right
For a US visa, the head — measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair — must be between 50% and 69% of the photo’s height. On a 600 × 600 photo that is 300 to 414 pixels. Turn on the guide, then drag and zoom until the top of your hair sits in the pink band above your face and your chin in the pink band below it: the inner oval is 50% of the height, the outer one 69%. A centred face with a little space above the hair usually lands in the middle of the range.
For the UK, do the opposite: if you took the photo yourself, upload it uncropped, at least 600 × 750 pixels and 50 KB, because the passport service crops it. For printed passport photos instead of uploads, use the passport photo maker, which lays out a print sheet.
Visa Photo Maker FAQ
What size is a US visa photo for the DS-160?
A square colour JPEG from 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, no larger than 240 kB, with the head 50–69% of the image height on a plain white or off-white background. This visa photo maker’s first preset produces 600 × 600 pixels under 240 kB.
My photo is over 240 kB — how do I reduce it?
Choose the DS-160 preset. The tool lowers JPEG quality step by step until the file is at most 240,000 bytes, without changing the 600 × 600 size.
What photo size does the India e-Visa need?
A square JPEG — height and width equal — between 10 KB and 1 MB, showing your full face from the front on a plain light or white background, without spectacles or borders.
Can this tool make my background white?
No. It crops, resizes and controls the file size only. Take the photo against a white wall, or whiten it first with Change Background Color, then come back here.
Will my visa photo be accepted?
The tool gets the technical parts right — pixels, shape, format, file size and head size — but officers also judge lighting, expression, focus and background. Follow the official guidance, and if in doubt use a professional photographer.
Is my photo uploaded to your server?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so your photo stays on your device.
