TDS late fee and interest calculator for 234E and 201(1A)
Missed a TDS date? This TDS late fee and interest calculator works out the three costs of a delay: interest at 1% a month when tax is deducted late, 1.5% a month when deducted tax reaches the government late, and the ₹200 a day fee for filing the TDS statement late. It also tells you when a penalty becomes possible, so you know what to pay by challan before you file.
From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies: the fee under 234E is now section 427, interest under 201(1A) is section 398(3) and the 271H penalty is section 461. The rates and the daily fee did not change. Results are estimates, not tax advice.
How to use the TDS Late Fee & Interest Calculator
- Enter the TDS amount and the date the payment was made or credited to the payee — the day tax became deductible.
- Add the date the tax was actually deducted and the date it was paid to the government. Leave a date empty if that step is still pending; it is counted to today.
- Enter the date the statement was filed and choose the statement type: quarterly with a TAN, or Form 141 for property, rent paid by individuals and 194M.
- Read the interest, the fee and the total, and check the notes for the penalty window. Copy summary keeps the figures.
- Under Month counting, compare calendar months with month-long periods, or enter a due date that CBDT extended.

How interest on late TDS is calculated
Late deduction: 1% of the tax for every month or part of a month from the date it was deductible — when you paid or credited the payee, whichever came first — to the date you deducted it. Late payment: 1.5% for every month or part of a month from the date you deducted it to the date it was paid. Interest on late payment starts on the date of deduction, not on the 7th, so paying even one day late costs at least a month.
Worked example: TDS of ₹25,000 on a fee credited on 10 May 2026 is deducted on 15 June: May and June are two months, so 1% × 2 × ₹25,000 = ₹500. It is paid on 20 July instead of 7 July: 15 June to 20 July covers June and July, 1.5% × 2 × ₹25,000 = ₹750. The Q1 statement due on 31 July is filed on 20 August, 20 days late: 20 × ₹200 = ₹4,000. Total ₹5,250, paid before filing.
Late filing fee under 234E (section 427)
Section 461(2) gives that one-month window only for a late or missing statement; filing a statement with wrong details can attract the penalty even when it was on time.
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| ₹200 for every day of delay | From the day after the due date to the day the statement is filed |
| Capped at the TDS amount | A ₹3,000 TDS can never attract more than ₹3,000 in fee |
| Paid before filing | Pay it by challan with the interest, then file |
| Applies to Form 141 too | Late challan-cum-statements for property and rent were charged under 234E as Form 26QB / 26QC |
| Penalty is separate | Section 461 (271H): ₹10,000 to ₹1,00,000, not levied if everything is paid and the statement is filed within one month of the due date |
Limits of this estimate
- It does not model a deductor who never deducts and whose payee has already paid the tax; that relief (section 398(2), ex-201(1)) needs an accountant’s certificate and changes the interest period.
- Government deductors paying by book entry, and the separate penalty for failing to deduct (271C, now section 448), are not covered.
- To work out the TDS itself use the TDS calculator; for property purchases, the TDS on property calculator; for income-tax interest on late returns, the 234A, 234B and 234C calculator.
TDS Late Fee & Interest Calculator FAQ
How is the late fee for a TDS return calculated?
₹200 for each day after the due date until the statement is filed, but never more than the TDS in that statement. This late fee calculator for TDS returns shows the days and the cap.
How do I use a 234E late fee calculator for Q1?
The Q1 (April–June) statement is due on 31 July. Enter the filing date: filing on 20 August is 20 days late, a fee of ₹4,000 if the TDS is at least that much.
What is the interest on TDS late payment?
1.5% a month or part of a month on the tax, from the date it was deducted to the date it was paid, once the payment misses the due date. Deducting late costs 1% a month from the date it was deductible.
Is part of a month counted as a full month?
Yes. The TDS CPC counts each calendar month touched, so 25 June to 8 July is two months. Some tribunals have read it as periods of 30 days, which this calculator can show as well.
What is section 427 of the Income-tax Act, 2025?
It is the old section 234E: the fee of ₹200 a day for a late TDS or TCS statement, capped at the tax, payable before the statement is filed.
Can the late fee be waived?
The fee is mandatory once a statement is late. The penalty under section 461 (271H) is not levied if tax, fee and interest are paid and the statement is filed within one month of the due date.
