Read your Form 26AS without uploading it
Form 26AS, the Annual Tax Statement, lists every rupee of tax deducted (TDS) or collected (TCS) against your PAN in a financial year — by your employer, bank, tenant, car dealer or forex provider — as reported by them to the Income Tax Department. Before filing your return you need to know that each deduction is there, that it was deposited, and that its booking status is “F” (final). This Form 26AS reader opens the PDF in your browser and turns it into clear tables: totals by deductor TAN, by quarter and by section.
It also reads the TDS/TCS part of the Annual Information Statement (AIS), flags unmatched or provisional entries and differences between deducted and deposited amounts, and shows the new section of the Income-tax Act, 2025 next to each old section code.
Your statement never leaves the device: pdf.js reads it locally, and a password, if the file has one, is used only in this tab. This is an informational tool, not tax advice.
How to use the Form 26AS & AIS Reader
- Download Form 26AS from the e-filing portal (e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Form 26AS, which opens TRACES; choose the year and “PDF”), or the AIS PDF from the AIS page.
- Drop the PDF on the box above, or press “Try a sample statement” to see how it works with made-up data.
- If it is password-protected, type the password and press Unlock (see the password section below).
- Read the Checks: anything marked “Check” needs a word with the deductor before you file.
- Use the deductor, quarter and section tables to tick off each TDS credit in your ITR; download CSV or JSON, or copy the summary.
Form 26AS & AIS Reader features
Private by design
No upload, no account, no storage: the PDF, your PAN and the password stay in this browser tab.
TDS and TCS by deductor
Name, TAN, sections, amount paid or credited, tax deducted or collected, and tax deposited, with totals.
Quarter-wise totals
Each entry’s transaction date is placed in Q1 (April–June) to Q4 (January–March), the way TDS returns are filed.
Old and new section numbers
Section codes such as 192, 194A or 206CL are matched to the Income-tax Act, 2025 using the CBDT’s official correspondence table.
Booking-status checks
Entries marked U, P or O, deductor summaries that do not add up, and deducted-versus-deposited gaps are flagged.
Form 26AS password and download
The AIS PDF password is your PAN in lower case followed by your date of birth as DDMMYYYY — for example abcde1234f01011990 (some guidance gives the PAN in capitals, so try both). A Form 26AS PDF from TRACES is often not protected; when it is, the password is usually your date of birth as DDMMYYYY. The reader asks for the password only when the file needs one. To keep an unlocked copy, use Unlock PDF.
What the parts and status letters mean
Parts IV, V, VIII and IX (property, rent and virtual-asset transactions) are listed as present but not tabulated — read them in the PDF.
| In the statement | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Part I | TDS on salary, interest, rent, fees and other payments — the part most people need |
| Part II | Entries where no TDS was deducted because you gave Form 15G/15H |
| Part VI | TCS — for example on a car above ₹10 lakh or a foreign remittance |
| Part VII / X | Refunds paid to you / defaults in the deductor’s statements |
| F — Final | The deposit matches the deductor’s TDS statement: safe to claim |
| U — Unmatched | The deductor has not deposited the tax or quoted wrong challan details |
| P — Provisional | Government deductor; becomes F after the Pay & Accounts Office verifies it |
| O — Overbooked | More claimed in the statement than deposited |
Old section codes and the Income-tax Act, 2025
From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces the 1961 Act, and TDS provisions are consolidated: salary (192) moves to section 392, most other TDS (193 to 196D, including 194A interest and 194J fees) to section 393, and TCS (206C) to section 390. Statements for FY 2025-26 still use the 1961 codes, so the reader shows both, from the CBDT’s utility to check provisions of the two Acts (records dated 5 May 2026, checked 24 October 2026). The table maps sections, not the rows inside them; look up any section with the section mapping tool.
How it works and its limits
- pdf.js returns every piece of text with its position; the reader groups text into lines, finds each “PART-” heading, takes a line with a TAN as a deductor’s summary row and a line with a section code and dates as one entry.
- The amounts are the last three money values on a line: paid or credited, tax, and deposited. Rows that do not fit this pattern are left out, so compare the totals with your PDF.
- AIS reading covers the TDS/TCS information only; SFT information such as interest, dividends and share sales is not tabulated, and the AIS layout changes more often than Form 26AS.
- Scanned statements have no text layer and need PDF OCR first. For your salary certificate, use the Form 16 reader and compare its quarterly TDS with Part I here.
Form 26AS & AIS Reader FAQ
How do I download Form 26AS as a PDF?
Log in to the income-tax e-filing portal, open e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Form 26AS, continue to TRACES, choose the assessment year and “PDF” as the format, and download.
What is the password of a Form 26AS PDF?
If the file asks for one, it is usually your date of birth as DDMMYYYY. The AIS PDF uses your PAN in lower case plus your date of birth, such as abcde1234f01011990.
Is it safe to open my 26AS here?
Yes. Nothing is uploaded; the PDF is read by your own browser and is forgotten when you close the tab.
Why does TDS in Form 26AS differ from Form 16?
The employer may have deposited late, quoted a wrong PAN or not yet filed its quarterly statement. The credit you can claim is what Form 26AS shows, so ask the employer to correct it.
What does status U mean in Form 26AS?
Unmatched: the deductor’s statement does not match a deposit. The credit may be refused until the deductor corrects the statement or pays.
