Split a bill fairly — evenly or by what each person ordered

The split bill calculator works out who owes what after a group dinner, a weekend trip or a shared cab. Enter the bill, the tax and the tip, say how many people are sharing, and each person’s share appears instantly — in rupees, dollars, pounds, euros, dirhams or two dozen other currencies.

Splitting evenly is fair when everyone ate about the same. When one friend had a starter, two mains and dessert and another had soup, it isn’t. Switch to By items, type what each person ordered, add the dishes the table shared, and the calculator divides the shared food equally and the tax and tip in proportion to what each person spent. One tap copies a tidy summary for WhatsApp, iMessage or your group chat — and nothing is uploaded, so it works on your phone at the table.

How to use the Split Bill Calculator

  1. Type what the bill is for (it becomes the first line of the message) and choose your currency.
  2. Pick Evenly to divide the bill equally, or By items to enter each person’s own items. Separate amounts with + or spaces, such as 250 + 120.
  3. Enter the tax and the tip, using the % / amount switch beside each depending on whether your receipt shows a rate or a fixed figure.
  4. In itemised mode, put dishes everyone shared — starters, a bottle of wine, the delivery fee — in the “Shared items” box.
  5. Optionally round each share up to the nearest 1, 5, 10, 50 or 100 so nobody needs change.
  6. Press “Copy message” (or “Share” on a phone) and send the summary to the group.

Split Bill Calculator features

Even or itemised splitting

Divide the total equally between up to 100 people, or list up to 30 people’s orders so bigger orders pay more.

Fair tax and tip

In itemised mode, tax and tip are divided in proportion to each person’s subtotal — the same result as if everyone had paid separately.

Rate or amount

Enter tax and tip as a percentage or as the exact amount printed on the receipt, and choose whether the tip is worked out before or after tax.

Round-up option

Round every share up to a convenient figure and see exactly how much extra that collects.

Ready-to-send message

A plain-text summary with each person’s amount, ready to paste into a chat, SMS or email, or send with your phone’s share sheet.

How the split is calculated

Even split: total = bill + tax + tip and each person pays = total ÷ number of people. A ₹2,400 bill with 5% GST and a 10% tip on the pre-tax amount has ₹120 tax, a ₹240 tip and a ₹2,760 total, so four people pay ₹690 each.

Itemised split: each person’s subtotal is their own items plus an equal share of the shared items. Tax and tip are then divided in proportion: person’s tax = total tax × person’s subtotal ÷ everyone’s subtotal, and the same for the tip. Someone who ordered 40% of the food pays 40% of the tax and the tip.

Worked example: Asha orders ₹420 + ₹90, Ben ₹560 and Chen ₹380 + ₹120, and they share starters worth ₹340 (₹113.33 each). Their subtotals are ₹623.33, ₹673.33 and ₹613.33 — ₹1,910 in all. With 5% tax (₹95.50) and a 10% tip (₹191), Ben carries 673.33 ÷ 1,910 = 35.25% of the extras, so he pays ₹673.33 + ₹33.67 + ₹67.33 = ₹774.33.

Rounding is always upwards, so the group never comes up short; the difference is shown as “Extra from rounding”.

Tax, service charge and tip: what to enter

  • India: restaurant bills usually show GST separately, commonly 5% at standalone restaurants. Enter the food total as the bill and 5% as tax. Consumer guidelines issued in 2022 say a service charge must not be added by default, so any tip is your choice — the GST calculator can separate tax from an inclusive total.
  • United States and Canada: menu prices exclude sales tax, which varies by state and city. Enter the receipt’s tax as an amount and tip 15–20% on the pre-tax amount.
  • United Kingdom and Europe: VAT is already included in menu prices, so set tax to 0. If the bill carries a discretionary 12.5% service charge, enter the food total as the bill and 12.5% as the tip rather than tipping on top of it.
  • Trips and shared costs: add tolls, parking or a delivery fee as shared items so they are divided equally. Work out the petrol for a road trip first with the fuel cost calculator.

Tips for splitting without arguments

  • If only some people shared a dish, add their part to their own items (170 each for two people sharing a ₹340 starter) rather than under “Shared items”.
  • Rounding shares up to the nearest 10 or 50 makes UPI, bank or app transfers quicker, and the small extra goes to the staff.
  • For the tip alone, the tip calculator compares common percentages side by side; for a voucher or coupon on the bill, use the discount calculator.

Split Bill Calculator FAQ

How do I split a bill with tax and tip?

Add the tax and the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. A split bill calculator does this for you and can round each share up.

Is it fairer to split evenly or by items?

Evenly is quickest and fair when everyone ordered similar amounts. If orders differ a lot, the itemised mode is fairer: each person pays for their own food plus a proportional share of tax and tip.

How is the tip shared when people order different amounts?

In proportion to each person’s subtotal. If your food was 30% of the table’s total, you pay 30% of the tip and 30% of the tax — the same as if you had been billed separately.

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?

Etiquette guides in the US and Canada generally suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, which is the default here. Tick “Tip on the amount after tax” if you prefer to tip on the full total.

Can I enter several items for one person?

Yes. Type the amounts separated by + or spaces, such as 420 + 90 + 60. You can include a negative amount for a discount, for example 560 − 50.

Does the calculator save my bill or send it anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Only your currency choice is stored on this device so it is ready next time.
