A free online notepad that saves as you type
This online notepad is a calm, clutter-free place to write. Open the page and start typing — there is nothing to sign up for and no save button to remember. Every few keystrokes your note is stored in your browser, and the badge at the top changes from “Saving…” to “Saved” so you always know where you stand.
Keep as many notes as you like. The first line of each note becomes its title in the notes list, you can rename any note, and the search box finds a word across all of them in an instant. When a piece of writing is finished, download it as a plain .txt file, print it, or export every note as a single backup file.
Because notes live only on your device, the notepad is a safe home for rough drafts, meeting notes, to-copy snippets, lists and ideas you are not ready to share. Nothing is uploaded, and the page keeps working even if your connection drops after it has loaded.
How to use the Online Notepad
- Click in the writing area and start typing. The first line becomes the note’s title.
- Watch the badge next to the title: “Saving…” turns into “Saved” about half a second after you stop typing.
- Press “New note” to start another note, and pick any note from the list (tap “Notes” on a phone) to switch to it.
- Use the search box to find a note by any word in its title or text, and “Rename” to give a note a fixed title.
- Adjust the text size with the A buttons, switch on “Mono” for code or tables, and press “Focus” for a full-screen, distraction-free view.
- Press “.txt” to download the note, “Open” to load a text file, “Print” for a clean paper copy, or “Export all” to back up every note.
Online Notepad features
Autosave with a visible status
Notes are saved shortly after each pause in typing, and again whenever you leave the tab, so a reload or closed window never loses your work.
Multiple notes with search
Notes are listed newest first with a preview line. Search filters titles and full text as you type.
Live word and character count
The footer shows words, characters and lines for the current note — handy for essays, posts and forms with limits.
Focus mode
Hide everything except your words in a full-screen editor with larger, comfortable line spacing. Press Esc to return.
Plain-text files in and out
Download any note as a UTF-8 .txt file, or open .txt, .md, .csv and .log files to read or edit them.
Print just the note
Printing (or Ctrl+P) produces a tidy page with the note’s title and text only — no menus, buttons or page chrome. Choose “Save as PDF” in the print dialog to get a PDF.
Keyboard shortcuts
The notepad is built to be used without lifting your hands from the keyboard. On a Mac, use ⌘ instead of Ctrl.
- Ctrl + S — save immediately (it also stops the browser’s own “Save page” dialog from opening).
- Ctrl + Shift + F — switch focus mode on or off.
- Esc — leave focus mode.
- Ctrl + P — print the current note on its own, or save it as a PDF.
Where are my notes stored?
Notes are kept in your browser’s local storage for this website. They never leave your computer or phone, which makes the notepad private by design — but it also means notes are tied to this browser on this device. A different browser, another device or a private/incognito window starts with an empty notepad.
Your notes stay put until you delete them or clear this site’s data in your browser settings. To move notes to another device, press “Export all” to download a JSON backup and “Import” it on the other device; notes that exist in both places keep their most recently edited version. If the browser ever refuses to save (for example because storage is full), the badge turns red and says “Not saved”, so you can download a copy straight away.
Ideas for using an online notepad
- Clean up copied text. Paste text from a PDF or web page to strip its formatting, then copy it onward as plain text. To tidy spacing or capitalisation, try Remove Extra Spaces or the Case Converter.
- Draft before you post. Write emails, social posts and cover letters here first, then check the length in the footer or in the Word Counter.
- Meeting and lecture notes. Start a new note per meeting; the first line (for example “Design review — 7 Oct”) becomes a searchable title.
- Listen back to a draft. Paste a finished note into Text to Speech to hear it read aloud and catch awkward sentences.
Online Notepad FAQ
Is this online notepad free?
Yes. The online notepad is completely free, has no account or sign-up, and has no limit on the number of notes apart from your browser’s storage space (usually several megabytes — millions of characters).
Does the notepad save automatically?
Yes. It saves about half a second after you stop typing, and again when you switch tabs, close the page or press Ctrl+S. The badge next to the title shows “Saved” once your latest change is stored.
Can anyone else see my notes?
No. Notes are stored only in your own browser and are never uploaded to a server. Anyone using the same browser profile on your device could open them, so avoid storing passwords here on shared computers.
Why are my notes missing on my phone?
Notes are saved per browser and device, not in the cloud. Use “Export all” on the device that has your notes and “Import” on the other one to copy them across.
How do I save a note as a PDF?
Press “Print” (or Ctrl+P) and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the note’s title and text are printed, without any website elements.
Can I open and edit an existing .txt file?
Yes. Press “Open”, choose a plain-text file such as .txt, .md or .csv, and it opens as a new note. Edit it, then press “.txt” to download the updated version.
