The class 1 age rule is the question parents in India ask most, because it changed with NEP 2020: Class 1 now starts at 6 years after three years of pre-school (Balvatika), and many states are moving to it at different speeds and with different cut-off dates. Class 1 age limit in India
Sources: KVS Admission Guidelines 2026-27 onwards (Part A, age criteria); Delhi Directorate of Education entry-level schedule for 2026-27 as reported in November 2025; Karnataka government circular and the 60-day relaxation announced in March 2026. Delhi has announced a move to Lower and Upper KG with Class 1 at 6+, but the dates for later sessions were reported inconsistently, so this tool does not guess them. Other states — Maharashtra among them — have notified phased changes that were still being reported differently in October 2026; use Custom with your school’s notice.

Starting school in the UK and the US
England: school years run from 1 September to 31 August, and most children start reception full-time in the September after their fourth birthday. Compulsory school age begins on 31 December, 31 March or 31 August on or after the fifth birthday, and the child must start at the beginning of the next term. Parents of summer-born children (April to August) can ask for a reception place at five; the admission authority decides. Scotland and Northern Ireland use other dates.
United States: kindergarten cut-offs are set by each state, and many use 1 September. California also offers transitional kindergarten (TK) for children who turn four by 1 September. If your state or district is not listed, choose Custom and enter its cut-off — for example 5 by 1 September, or 6 by 31 December for a first-grade rule.
Tips for admission season
- Keep a birth certificate ready: schools check the date of birth against it.
- Ask whether a school relaxes the cut-off (Delhi heads of school may allow up to a month) and whether children with special needs have an extended upper age limit (two years under KVS rules).
- If your child is just past a cut-off, compare two sessions in the plan table before deciding.

What is the class 1 age limit under NEP 2020?
NEP 2020 places Class 1 at age 6, after three years of pre-school. Kendriya Vidyalayas admit children who are 6 but under 8 on 31 March of the admission year; a child born on 1 April is also considered.
What is the class 1 age criteria for 2027-28?
Under the KVS rule the child must be 6 by 31 March 2027 (born on or before 1 April 2021) and under 8. State boards and private schools may use different dates — choose your system above or enter your school’s rule.
What is the age group for Balvatika and nursery?
Under KVS, Balvatika-1 is for 3–4 year olds, Balvatika-2 for 4–5 and Balvatika-3 for 5–6, on 31 March. Delhi private schools admitted nursery at 3+, KG at 4+ and Class 1 at 5+ for 2026-27.
When does my child start reception in England?
