Random Bible Verse Generator

A random Bible verse, a verse by topic, or the verse of the day

This random Bible verse generator gives you a verse from anywhere in the Bible, from the Old or New Testament only, or from a list on a topic such as hope, peace, strength, anxiety, forgiveness or love. When the page opens it shows the verse of the day, which is the same for everyone on that date. You can read the verses around it, copy it, or download it as a square image for a message, a slide or social media.

The text is the World English Bible (WEB), a modern English translation that its publisher, eBible.org, has placed in the public domain, so you can quote it as freely as you like. The page loads only the book it needs, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere.

How to use the Random Bible Verse Generator

1. Choose Whole Bible (optionally only the Old or New Testament) or A topic and pick one from the list.
2. Press New verse. Press it again for another.
3. Press Verse of the day to return to today’s verse.
4. Press Show context to read three verses on each side.
5. Press Copy, or choose a light or dark style and press Download image for a 1080 × 1080 picture.

Random Bible Verse Generator features

Why the World English Bible?

Most modern translations, such as the NIV and ESV, are under copyright and cannot be reproduced in bulk without permission. The King James Version is out of copyright in most countries, but in the United Kingdom it remains under the Crown’s letters patent, so this page does not use it. The World English Bible is an update of the American Standard Version of 1901, revised into contemporary English, and it is dedicated to the public domain. Its publisher asks only that a changed text not be called the World English Bible; the text here is unchanged.

One difference you will notice: where many translations print “the LORD”, the WEB uses the divine name “Yahweh”. Book names and verse numbers follow the usual English Protestant Bible of 66 books. A few verse numbers have no text in the WEB because the oldest manuscripts lack them (for example Acts 8:37), and the generator skips them.
