A PTE to IELTS converter based on Pearson’s own concordance

This PTE to IELTS converter turns PTE Academic scores into IELTS Academic bands using the concordance Pearson published in July 2025 — the study of 1,522 people who took both tests. Enter your overall score and any of the four skill scores (listening, reading, speaking and writing) and see the band each reaches, or start from an IELTS band and read off the PTE range.

Pearson’s method assigns each IELTS band the lowest PTE score that relates to it, so a PTE score is placed at the highest band whose threshold it reaches: overall 55 is the threshold for IELTS 6.5, and 54 is still 6.0. The table is shown in full so you can see how close you are to the next band. Everything is calculated in your browser.

How to use the PTE to IELTS Converter

Why the skills do not match the overall score

PTE’s speaking and writing tasks are integrated with other skills, and the scales are not interchangeable: a PTE speaking score of 66 matches IELTS speaking 6.5, while PTE listening needs 53 for the same band. If an institution asks for “IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0”, convert the skills one by one with the skill fields instead of reading the overall row.

Pearson reports the study is strongest between IELTS 5.5 and 8, where there were most test takers; the highest and lowest rows rest on few people and should be treated with extra caution.

Before you rely on a conversion

A concordance does not change anyone’s stated requirement. Universities, professional bodies and immigration authorities list the PTE score they accept, and that figure is what counts. What is a PTE score of 65 in IELTS?

A PTE overall of 65 reaches the threshold for IELTS 7.0 (63–70) in Pearson’s July 2025 concordance.

What PTE score do I need for IELTS 6.5?

An overall PTE score of 55 to 62 corresponds to IELTS 6.5. By skill, listening 53–57, reading 54–58, speaking 66–75 and writing 60–68.

Is there a different table for PTE Core?

Yes. This page covers PTE Academic only. PTE Core, used for Canadian immigration, has its own CLB table in the IELTS to CLB calculator.

Why do other charts show different PTE scores?

Older charts come from Pearson’s 2020 and earlier studies or from third parties. This page uses the July 2025 study, the one Pearson now publishes.

Does the converter give my official IELTS band?

No. It shows the band Pearson’s concordance places beside your PTE score. Only an IELTS test report gives an official IELTS score.

Why is there no row for IELTS 9.0 writing?

Pearson’s table lists no separate PTE writing range for it; the sample had no one at that band, so the converter shows a dash.
