An IELTS band score calculator that follows IELTS’s rounding rule
This IELTS band score calculator does the two steps people usually do by hand. First it turns your Listening and Reading raw scores — the number of correct answers out of 40 — into bands, using a practice conversion chart for the Academic or General Training test. Then it takes your Writing and Speaking bands, averages the four, and rounds the result to the overall band exactly as IELTS describes it.
Use it after a practice test to see where you stand, or to check how a Writing 6.5 and a Speaking 6.0 pull an overall score up or down. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How to use the IELTS Band Score Calculator
- Choose Academic or General Training — only the Reading chart differs.
- Type the number of correct answers (0–40) for Listening and for Reading.
- Pick your Writing and Speaking bands. For practice, use your teacher’s or a marking service’s estimate.
- Read the overall band, the four section bands and the average the rounding started from.
- Check the chart below the result to see how many marks you need for the next band.
IELTS Band Score Calculator features
Official rounding rule
An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band; anything else goes to the nearest half band.
Academic and General Training
Listening uses one chart; Reading has a separate, harder-to-score chart for General Training.
Anchor marks shown
The chart is matched to the marks IELTS itself states for bands 5, 6, 7 and 8, and says so on the page.
Live chart
The conversion table switches with the module so you can see the ranges next to your score.
How the overall band is calculated
Add the four section bands and divide by four. A candidate with Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 6.5 has a mean of 6.875, which is closer to 7.0 than to 6.5, so the overall band is 7.0. A mean of 6.25 is exactly between 6.0 and 6.5 and goes up to 6.5; a mean of 6.75 goes up to 7.0; a mean of 6.125 is nearer 6.0 and stays there.
| Average of four bands | Overall band |
|---|---|
| 6.125 | 6.0 |
| 6.25 | 6.5 |
| 6.375 | 6.5 |
| 6.625 | 6.5 |
| 6.75 | 7.0 |
| 6.875 | 7.0 |
Why the raw-to-band chart is approximate
IELTS publishes only a handful of anchor marks and says the exact number of marks for a band varies slightly from one test version to the next. The chart on this page is the practice-test guide used by most coaching material. It reproduces IELTS’s anchors (for example 30 correct answers is about band 7 in Listening and Academic Reading) but a real paper can differ by a mark either way. Treat a result within one mark of a boundary as “could go either way”.
General Training Reading is scored on a stricter curve: 30 correct answers is roughly band 6 there, against band 7 on the Academic paper. That is why the module switch matters.

Planning an application? The IELTS to CLB calculator converts General Training bands to Canadian levels, and the English test to CEFR converter shows what your band means on the European scale. A study plan can help you schedule the weaker section.
IELTS Band Score Calculator FAQ
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
It is the average of your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 goes up to the next half band and one ending in .75 goes up to the next whole band.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in IELTS Listening?
About 30 out of 40 in the usual practice chart, which matches the anchor mark IELTS gives. The exact number varies slightly between test versions.
Is IELTS Reading scored differently for General Training?
Yes. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band, so this calculator uses a separate chart when you choose it.
Can I calculate Writing and Speaking bands here?
No. Those are marked by trained examiners against published band descriptors, so you enter the band you were given or an estimate from your teacher.
Is this my official IELTS score?
No. Official bands appear on your Test Report Form. This is an estimate for practice and planning.
Does the overall band round each section first?
The four section bands are already whole or half bands. They are averaged first and the average is rounded once.
