Convert megabytes to gigabytes (MB to GB)
To convert megabytes to gigabytes, divide the value in megabytes by 1,000. It helps you add up file sizes, app downloads, photo libraries and mobile data use to see how much storage or allowance they need. This mb to gb converter works both ways: type megabytes or gigabytes into either box above and the other box, the worked formula and the chart below update as you type.
A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes (10⁶) in the SI units used by storage makers and networks. A mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes. Megabytes measure photos (a phone photo is typically a few MB), songs, documents, apps and mobile data use. One megabyte is 0.001 gigabytes.
A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000 megabytes, or one billion bytes. The binary gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes — about 7.4% more. Going the other way, one gigabyte equals 1,000 megabytes. Gigabytes are used for phone storage, RAM, mobile data plans, games and video downloads.
How to convert mb to gb with this tool
- Type a number into the Megabytes (MB) box — it starts at 500 MB as an example.
- Read the answer in the Gigabytes (GB) box and in the result panel, which also shows the formula with your number.
- To go the other way, type into the gigabytes box, or press the swap button to open the GB to MB converter with your value carried over.
- Choose how many decimal places you want, or tap a quick value such as 100 MB, 500 MB, 1,000 MB.
- Press Copy result to paste the conversion into a message, spreadsheet or note.
MB to GB converter features
Converts both ways
Type in the megabytes box to get gigabytes, or in the gigabytes box to get megabytes. The other box follows instantly.
Exact factor
Calculations use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, and rounding is applied only to the answer you see — choose Auto or 0–10 decimal places.
Formula with your number
The working is shown under the result, for example 500 MB ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 GB, so you can check it or copy the method.

Binary units shown
The binary equivalent (MiB to GiB, dividing by 1,024) is shown under the result, to match what Windows reports.
MB to GB formula
The formula is GB = MB ÷ 1,000. It is exact because SI prefixes step by exactly 1,000: 1 GB = 1,000 MB.
The reverse formula is MB = GB × 1,000 — or use the GB to MB converter. Three worked examples:
- A 500 MB video: 500 MB ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 GB
- A 4.7 GB DVD (4,700 MB): 4,700 MB ÷ 1,000 = 4.7 GB
- Mobile data use of 1,500 MB: 1,500 MB ÷ 1,000 = 1.5 GB
Decimal (GB) or binary (GiB)?
This converter uses decimal SI prefixes, as drive makers, network speeds and mobile carriers do: each step is × 1,000. Computers often count in powers of two instead — 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB and 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB. The IEC introduced these “-bi” names in 1998 so the two systems could be told apart, but Windows still labels binary values “KB”, “MB” and “GB”.
So the same digits can mean two things: 2,048 MB = 2.048 GB in decimal units, while 2,048 MiB = 2 GiB in binary units. The binary figure is shown under the main answer.
MB to GB quick reference
The values people look up most often, worked out with the exact factor:
- 1 MB = 0.001 GB
- 1 GB = 1,000 MB
- 100 MB = 0.1 GB
- 500 MB = 0.5 GB
- 1,000 MB = 1 GB
- 1,500 MB = 1.5 GB
Quick tip: Move the decimal point three places to the left: 750 MB = 0.75 GB. If the source counts in binary (MiB), divide by 1,024 instead.

MB to GB FAQ
How many gigabytes is 250 MB?
250 megabytes is 0.25 gigabytes: 250 MB ÷ 1,000 = 0.25 GB.
How do I convert mb to gb?
Divide the value in megabytes by 1,000. For example, 2,048 MB ÷ 1,000 = 2.048 GB. To convert back, multiply the value in gigabytes by 1,000 — or use the GB to MB converter.
How many megabytes are in one gigabyte?
One gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes, because 1 GB × 1,000 = 1,000 MB.
What is 2,048 megabytes in gigabytes?
Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?
Both are used. In SI (decimal) units — used by storage makers, network providers and this converter — 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Windows and RAM sizes count in binary units, where 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. So 2,048 MB is 2.048 GB, but 2,048 MiB is exactly 2 GiB.
