A shoe size converter for US, UK, EU, India and Japan sizes
Shoe sizes are one of the most confusing conversions there is: the same foot can be a 9 in the US, an 8 in the UK and India, a 42 in Europe and a 27 in Japan. This shoe size converter translates men’s, women’s and kids’ sizes between all of those systems, and adds the measurements behind them — foot length in centimetres and inches and the Mondopoint number used for ski boots.
Pick the chart, choose the system you know and your size, and every equivalent appears at once. Not sure? Type your foot length for the closest size; the full chart is underneath.
How to use the Shoe Size Converter

How shoe size systems work
Most size systems describe the last — the foot-shaped form a shoe is built around — rather than the foot itself, and each uses a different step size and starting point.
- UK and India: sizes step by one barleycorn, a third of an inch (8.47 mm). Adult size = 3 × last length in inches − 25, so a UK 8 has an 11-inch last. Children’s sizes run on a separate scale from 0 up to 13½ before adult size 1 begins. Shoes sold in India are labelled in UK sizes.
- US: uses the same third-of-an-inch steps but different starting points. Men’s sizes are usually UK + 1, and women’s are usually UK + 2, though some brands use 1½ or 2½. Children’s sizes run from 0C to 13½C, then continue as youth sizes 1Y, 1½Y and so on.
- EU (Paris point): one size is two-thirds of a centimetre of last length, so EU size = 1.5 × last length in cm. A UK 8 last of 27.94 cm is EU 41.9, sold as 42.
- Japan: sizes are simply foot length in centimetres, usually in half-centimetre steps — a 27 fits a foot of about 27 cm.
- Mondopoint (ISO 9407): foot length in millimetres, used for ski and snowboard boots and some military footwear.
How to measure your feet
If you are between two sizes, have wide feet, or are buying hiking or running shoes to wear with thick socks, choose the larger size.
- Measure in the evening, when feet are at their largest after a day of standing and walking.
- Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, wearing the socks you will wear with the shoes.
- Mark the tip of your longest toe — not always the big toe — and measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres.
- Measure both feet and use the longer one.
- Enter the length in the converter. The chart already allows about 1 cm of toe room, so enter your actual foot length.
Kids’ shoe sizes and growing room
Children’s sizes are a separate scale (UK 0–13½, then adult 1), and the same foot can be a different size in each brand. Published age charts disagree by a size or two, so this tool matches by foot length and does not guess from age.
Podiatry guidance is about 1 cm (a thumb’s width) between the longest toe and the shoe end, and no more than about 1.5 cm (Posture Podiatry, accessed October 2026). The chart already allows 1 cm, so use “Add growing room” only to see the next size up. Re-measure every three to six months.
Tips for buying shoes online
- Use this converter for the right range, then check the brand’s own chart; sports brands can differ by half a size.
- Women converting to men’s or unisex sneakers can usually go down one to one and a half US sizes.
- For heights and other measures in feet and inches, use the height converter or length converter.
Shoe Size Converter FAQ
How do I convert US shoe sizes to UK sizes?
For men, subtract about one size: US 9 is usually UK 8. For women, subtract about two: US 8 is usually UK 6. The shoe size converter shows the full chart, and brands can differ by half a size.
What is my EU shoe size?
EU size is about 1.5 times the length of the shoe’s last in centimetres. In practice, UK 8 / US men’s 9 is EU 42, and UK 6 / US women’s 8 is EU 39 to 39½.
What shoe size system does India use?
Shoes in India are sold in UK sizes, often labelled “UK/IND”. So an Indian size 8 is a UK 8, which is about a US men’s 9 or EU 42.
How do I find my shoe size from foot length?
Measure from your heel to your longest toe in centimetres and enter it under “Measure your foot”. The converter suggests the smallest size whose foot length is at least as long as yours.
What is the kids’ shoe size for a given foot length?
Type the foot length under “Measure your foot” on the Kids chart. It shows the smallest size whose foot length is at least as long; add growing room to see a size with extra space.
What is the difference between men’s and women’s shoe sizes?
In the US, a women’s size is usually one to one and a half sizes larger than the men’s size for the same foot — a women’s 8 is roughly a men’s 6½ to 7 (this chart uses 7). UK and EU sizes are the same for both.
Are Japanese shoe sizes in centimetres?
Yes. Japanese sizes give the foot length in centimetres, so a size 26 suits a foot of about 26 cm. That makes them a handy cross-check when other systems disagree.
