A cooking converter for cups, spoons, grams and oven settings

Recipes travel, but their measurements do not. This cooking converter handles the three problems every home cook meets: volume measures (US cups, metric cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, millilitres and fluid ounces), cups to grams for common ingredients such as flour, sugar, butter, rice and oats, and oven temperatures in °C, fan °C, °F and gas marks.

Use the top converter for liquids and spoon measures — 1 US cup is 16 tablespoons or 236.6 ml. Use the Cups to grams (and back) by ingredient panel when a recipe gives cups but you would rather weigh, or gives grams and you only have measuring cups. The oven chart is right there too, so you never have to leave the page mid-recipe.

How to use the Cooking Converter

  1. For volume, type the amount in Value (fractions such as 3/4 or 1 1/2 work), pick the measure in From and the one you want in To.
  2. Read the answer and formula, or tap a common conversion such as “1 cup (US) → tbsp (US)”. The list below shows the same amount in every kitchen measure.
  3. For weight, go to Cups to grams (and back) by ingredient: enter an Amount or tap a quick fraction like ½ or ¾.
  4. Choose a Measure — cups or spoons to get grams, or grams, ounces or pounds to get cups — and pick the Ingredient.
  5. Check the oven chart underneath when the recipe gives a gas mark or a temperature in the other scale.

Cooking Converter features

Ingredient-aware weights

Twenty-one everyday ingredients, from maida and atta to honey, butter, oats and chocolate chips, each with its own typical density.

Cups in both directions

Turn 1 cup of sugar into grams, or 300 g of flour into cups — answers are shown as kitchen fractions such as 2 ⅓ cups.

US, metric and UK measures

US cup (236.6 ml), metric cup (250 ml), US legal cup (240 ml), 15 ml and Australian 20 ml tablespoons, US and UK fluid ounces.

Oven chart included

Gas marks ¼ to 9 with conventional °C, fan-oven °C and °F side by side.

Fractions you can type or tap

Enter ⅓, 1 1/2 or 0.75 — or tap the quick-amount buttons.

Cups, spoons and millilitres

A US cup is half a US pint: 236.5882365 ml. It contains 16 US tablespoons, and each tablespoon holds 3 teaspoons, so a cup is 48 teaspoons. Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India commonly use a rounded metric cup of 250 ml with 15 ml tablespoons and 5 ml teaspoons — except that an Australian tablespoon is 20 ml. US nutrition labels use yet another “legal cup” of 240 ml. For most savoury cooking these differences do not matter; in baking, a 6% gap between a US and a metric cup of flour can.

The UK mostly measures by weight, and modern British spoons are the metric 5 ml and 15 ml. For pints, gallons and other liquid measures, the volume converter covers every US and imperial unit.

Cups to grams for common ingredients

These are typical weights for one level US cup (236.6 ml) of each ingredient, with dry ingredients spooned into the cup and levelled with a knife, and brown sugar packed. Scooping straight from the bag packs in noticeably more flour, so treat every figure as approximate and use a kitchen scale when precision matters.

Oven temperatures and gas marks

Gas marks are the oven settings printed on British gas cookers. Recipes round Celsius to the nearest 10 degrees and Fahrenheit to the nearest 25, so 180 °C and 350 °F are treated as the same setting even though 350 °F is exactly 176.7 °C. For a fan (convection) oven, reduce the conventional temperature by about 20 °C. The temperature converter gives the exact value for any other temperature.

Worked examples

Halving a US recipe: ¾ cup of milk halved is ⅜ cup — about 88.7 ml, or 6 tablespoons.

Weighing flour: 2 ½ cups of all-purpose flour × 125 g = 312.5 g. If the recipe author scooped and packed the flour, they may have used noticeably more, which is why bakers prefer grams.

Grams to cups: 100 g of granulated sugar is 100 ÷ 200 = ½ cup; 100 g of butter is 100 ÷ 227 ≈ 0.44 cup, or about 7 tablespoons.

Butter sticks: one US stick is ½ cup, 8 tablespoons or about 113 g.

Cooking Converter FAQ

How many grams are in a cup of flour?

About 125 g for all-purpose flour spooned into a US cup and levelled, and about 120 g for whole wheat flour (atta). Scooped or packed flour weighs more, so a kitchen scale is the most reliable option.

How many tablespoons are in a cup?

There are 16 US tablespoons in a US cup. A 250 ml metric cup holds about 16.7 tablespoons of 15 ml each.

How many ml is one cup?

A US cup is 236.6 ml, a metric cup is 250 ml and the US legal cup used on nutrition labels is 240 ml. The cooking converter lists all three.

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?

Three. A US tablespoon (14.8 ml) holds 3 US teaspoons (4.93 ml each); a metric tablespoon (15 ml) holds 3 metric teaspoons (5 ml each).

What is 180 °C in Fahrenheit and gas mark?

180 °C is 356 °F, which recipes round to 350 °F, and corresponds to gas mark 4. In a fan oven, use about 160 °C.

Why do cup-to-gram conversions differ between websites?

Because a cup measures volume, and how much an ingredient weighs depends on how tightly it is packed, its moisture and how finely it is ground. This cooking converter uses typical spooned-and-levelled values and labels them as approximate.
