A large print maker for documents, word searches and calendars
This large print maker turns ordinary text into a clear large-print document. Paste a letter, recipe, hymn sheet, menu or meeting notes, choose 18 pt or larger, and the text is reflowed onto A4 or Letter pages in a plain typeface, left-aligned, with generous line spacing. It is not a photocopy enlargement. Print it straight away or download a PDF or PNG.
The same tool makes a large print word search — bold letters on big squares, with an answer key — and a large print calendar with big day numbers. Everything is laid out in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How to use the Large Print Maker
- Choose Text document, Word search or Calendar.
- Paste your text (start a line with “# ” for a heading or “- ” for a bullet), or type the words to hide, or pick the month and year.
- Set Text size (18 pt is a good start), Line spacing, Colours and margins. Tick Bold text if the reader prefers it.
- Check the preview with the page arrows and read the tips under the numbers.
- Press Print pages, or download the PDF (vector, sharp at any size) or a PNG of the page shown first.

Warnings for text below 18 pt, long runs of capital letters, serif type and ink-heavy backgrounds.
What counts as large print?
UK and US guidance agree on the basics. The UK Association for Accessible Formats’ Minimum standards: clear and large print (UKAAF MS03, June 2012) sets a minimum of 16 point for large print, ideally at least 18 point. It also asks for a legible typeface such as Arial, no italics, underlining or large blocks of capitals, adequate line and paragraph spacing, left-aligned text, good contrast and non-glossy paper. The American Printing House for the Blind’s research-based large print guidelines treat 18 point as the minimum for a document to count as large print, recommend sans-serif fonts and suggest bold rather than italics for emphasis. RNIB describes clear print as usually 14 point and giant print as about 18 point and above.
People’s needs differ, so the best size is the one the reader chooses. Print a sample page at two sizes and ask.
| Print type | Typical size | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Standard print | 10–12 pt | Books, letters |
| Clear print | 12–14 pt | Everyday documents for a general audience |
| Large print | 16–18 pt and up | Readers with low vision (18 pt recommended) |
| Giant print | 20–28 pt and up | Readers who need very large text |
Tips for good large-print documents
- Keep it left-aligned. Justified text creates uneven gaps between words; this tool never justifies.
- Use bold, not capitals or italics, for emphasis, and keep headings short.
- Print on matt paper of at least 90–100 gsm so the next page doesn’t show through, and staple at the top left.
- Contrast matters as much as size. Black on white or cream works for most readers. Some prefer yellow or white on black; check the ink use before printing many copies, and test colour pairs with the contrast checker.
- For a standard-size PDF from plain text, use text to PDF; for bigger puzzle options, the full word search maker has 40-word grids and online play.
Large Print Maker FAQ
What font size is large print?
Large print is usually 16 point or larger, and 18 point is the most widely recommended minimum (UKAAF MS03 says 16 pt minimum, ideally 18 pt; APH uses 18 pt). Giant print is about 20 point and up.
How do I make a large print word search printable?
Choose Word search, type your words one per line, pick a grid size (8 × 8 or 10 × 10 is easiest to read) and press Print pages or Download PDF. Tick Answer key page for the solutions.
Which font is best for large print?
A plain sans-serif typeface such as Arial, Helvetica, Verdana or APHont. This tool uses Arial/Helvetica in the preview and Helvetica in the PDF. A serif option is there for readers who prefer it.
Can I make a large print book?
You can paste a chapter or a whole short book and print it as large print pages with page numbers. For long ebooks, the EPUB to PDF tool can also reflow at 16 or 18 pt. Only reproduce books you have the right to copy.
Why are some characters shown as “?” in the PDF?
The PDF uses the standard Helvetica and Times fonts, which cover Western European characters. Text in other scripts, such as Hindi, shows correctly in the preview, print and PNG, but not in the PDF.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The layout, PDF and PNG are made in your browser, and nothing is stored.
