A free online kanban board that stays on your device

This kanban board gives you the classic To do / Doing / Done workflow without an account, a team plan or a download. Add cards, drag them across columns, colour-code them with labels, set due dates that turn red when they slip, and keep several boards side by side. The Job tracker button starts a ready-made job application tracker.

Everything is stored in your browser’s local storage and nothing is sent to a server. Export a board as JSON (to import on another device), Markdown or CSV (for a spreadsheet), or print a one-page summary.

How to use the Kanban Board

  1. Press “Add card” at the bottom of a column, type a title and, if you like, a description, a due date and one or more labels. New labels are created inside the card dialog with a name and colour.
  2. Drag a card by its grip handle to another column or to a new position in the same column. On a keyboard, focus the card and press Alt + arrow keys; on a phone, use the ⋮ menu’s “Move left / right / up / down”.
  3. Use “Column” to add a column such as “Review” or “Blocked”; open a column’s ⋮ menu to rename it, set a WIP limit, move it left or right, or delete it (its cards move to the first column).
  4. Type in “Search cards” or pick a label in the filter to show only matching cards; the summary line tells you how many are shown and how many are overdue.
  5. Use the JSON, Markdown and CSV buttons to export the current board, “Import JSON” or “Import CSV” to bring one in, and “Print” for a paper or PDF summary.
  6. For job hunting, press “Job tracker” to create a board with Applied, Interview, Offer and Rejected columns. Put the follow-up date in the card’s due date.

Kanban Board features

Drag and drop that also works by keyboard

Cards move with the pointer on desktop and touch. Alt + arrow keys and a per-card menu do the same without a mouse.

Labels, due dates and overdue highlighting

Give cards coloured labels and a due date. Cards due within two days are amber; overdue cards are red unless they sit in the last column, where they count as done.

Markdown-lite descriptions with checklists

Write **bold**, *italic*, `code`, [links](https://…) and “- [ ] task” lines; tick boxes on the card and see progress (2/5).

WIP limits per column

Set a limit in the column settings; the counter turns red and the column border lights up when the limit is exceeded, a core practice of kanban.

Export to JSON, Markdown, CSV or paper

JSON round-trips through the importer; Markdown keeps column headings and card details; CSV has one row per card with position, labels and dates; print produces a tidy list by column.

Job application tracker: columns, follow-ups and CSV

The job tracker board has four columns: Applied, Interview, Offer, Rejected. Name each card “Company – Role”, put the posting link, the date you applied and contacts in the description, and set the due date to the day you plan to follow up; it turns amber, then red. Checklists and labels such as Referral or Remote work as on any card.

CSV in and out: “CSV” exports one row per card. “Import CSV” reads this export, or a sheet with the headers Company, Role, Status (or Column), Date applied, Follow-up, Link, Notes and Labels, and creates a new board, one card per row. Dates must be YYYY-MM-DD, and statuses outside the four columns become extra columns. Data stays in this browser.

How a kanban board works

Kanban started on Toyota’s factory floor to pull work through only as fast as it could be finished. Every task is a card and every stage a column. Three habits make it useful:

  1. Make work visible. If it is not on the board, it is not being done.
  2. Limit work in progress. A WIP limit of two or three on “Doing” forces you to finish before you start; columns over their limit are highlighted.
  3. Move cards, not deadlines. Overdue cards stay red until they are finished.

Backing up and moving boards

Because the board lives only in this browser, clearing site data or using a private window will not show it. The JSON export contains everything, and importing it on another device recreates the board.

The CSV export opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers with one row per card, or feeds another system via CSV to JSON. The Markdown export pastes cleanly into notes apps, issue trackers and wikis, keeping checklists as tick boxes.

Kanban Board FAQ

Is this kanban board free and does it need an account?

Yes, the kanban board is free with no sign-up. Your boards are saved in your own browser rather than on a server, which is also why no login is needed.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. Columns scroll sideways, cards are large enough to tap, and you can drag by the grip handle or use the ⋮ menu to move cards left, right, up or down.

How do I move a card with the keyboard?

Tab to the card (or click it) and press Alt together with an arrow key: left and right change column, up and down change position. Enter opens the card for editing, Delete removes it and N adds a new card to the same column.

Will my board sync between devices?

Not automatically — nothing leaves your device. Export the board as JSON on one device and import it on the other. Keep an export as a backup before clearing browser data.

What does the WIP limit do?

It sets how many cards a column should hold. You can still drop more cards in, but the counter turns red and the column is outlined, which is the signal to finish something before starting another.

Why is a card in Done still marked overdue?

It isn’t: a card in the last column is treated as finished, so its date badge turns green instead of red. Overdue only applies to cards still in earlier columns.
