An Instagram video resizer for every placement
Instagram shows video in several shapes: tall 4:5 and 3:4 posts in the feed, squares, wide 1.91:1 posts, and full-screen 9:16 Reels and Stories. A clip filmed for one rarely suits another, and when the app crops it for you it decides what to cut. This Instagram video resizer converts any video to the exact shape and pixel size you choose, keeping the whole picture on a blurred or coloured background or cropping it to a moving window you control.
Guides on the preview show the 3:4 area your profile grid displays and the safe zone Meta publishes for Reels and Stories, so captions and faces stay visible. The resizing runs in your browser with the Mediabunny library (MPL-2.0, loaded unmodified) and WebCodecs, and saves an H.264 MP4 with AAC sound — your video isn’t uploaded until you post it yourself.
How to resize a video for Instagram
- Drop your video on the upload area and check its length, resolution and frame rate.
- Pick the placement: “Feed portrait 4:5 · 1080 × 1350” for the feed, “Reel 9:16” or “Story 9:16” for full-screen, or a 3:4, square or landscape post.
- Choose Blurred video, Colour or Nothing — crop, and use Zoom to make the picture larger inside the frame.
- With “Show safe zones” on, keep faces and text inside the dashed area — the 3:4 grid tile for posts, Meta’s safe zone for Reels and Stories.
- Press “Make Instagram video”, play the result, press “Download MP4” and share it from the Instagram app.

Instagram video sizes as of 2026
Instagram accepts reels in any shape from 1.91:1 to 9:16, so every size above is a valid video. Feed photos can be between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Pixel sizes are the usual 1080-pixel-wide versions of each shape.
| Placement | Size | Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed portrait | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | Most space in the feed for a common video shape |
| Feed portrait (tallest) | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 | Tallest feed shape Instagram accepts for photos |
| Square | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Classic post |
| Landscape | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 | Widest shape Instagram accepts |
| Reel | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | Record and edit up to 20 minutes; at least 720 px and 30 fps |
| Story | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | Up to 60 seconds per clip; longer videos are split |
Fitting a video without cropping
Choose the shape you want and keep “Blurred video” selected: the whole original sits in the middle and a soft copy fills the rest. A 16:9 video in a 4:5 post fills about 45% of the height this way; raising Zoom to 150% makes it two-thirds of the height, trimming about a sixth of the picture from each side. “Colour” uses the same layout with a flat colour or a gradient, which suits text added later in the Instagram editor.
If the subject matters more than the edges, choose “Nothing — crop” and drag the preview, or set keyframes so the crop follows a moving subject.
Reels, Stories and safe zones
- Meta’s Ads Guide advises leaving about 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% at each side of Reels and Stories free of text and logos; the dashed guide shows that area.
- Instagram lets you record and edit reels up to 20 minutes, but reels longer than 3 minutes aren’t recommended to new audiences.
- A single story clip can be up to 60 seconds; Instagram splits longer videos into back-to-back clips automatically.
- For a dedicated Reels workflow, including Facebook Reels and ad sizes, use the Reels video resizer. Covers and photos go through the Instagram image resizer, and captions through the caption formatter.

Instagram Video Resizer FAQ
What is the best video size for an Instagram post?
1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) is a popular feed choice because it is tall without being cropped. 1080 × 1440 (3:4), 1080 × 1080 and 1080 × 566 also work. Reels and Stories are 1080 × 1920 (9:16).
How do I post a full video on Instagram without it being cropped?
Resize it to an Instagram shape first with “Blurred video” or “Colour” selected. The whole picture stays visible and the rest of the frame is filled, so Instagram has nothing left to crop.
How long can an Instagram video be?
Reels can be recorded and edited up to 20 minutes, though reels over 3 minutes aren’t recommended to people who don’t follow you. Story clips are up to 60 seconds each.
Why does my video look cut off on my profile grid?
The profile grid shows each post as a 3:4 tile. Feed sizes in this Instagram video resizer outline that area, so keep the important part inside it.
Which format does Instagram want?
An MP4 or MOV with H.264 video and AAC sound is the safe choice — Meta lists exactly that for Reels ads. This tool always saves H.264 + AAC in an MP4.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. It is resized on your device in the browser, and the result downloads straight to you.
