Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius (°F to °C)
To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5/9. Use it for American recipes and oven dials, US weather reports, fever readings and pool or aquarium temperatures. This fahrenheit to celsius converter works both ways: type Fahrenheit or Celsius into either box above and the other box, the worked formula and the chart below update as you type.
The degree Fahrenheit (°F) comes from the scale proposed by the physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in 1724. Water freezes at 32 °F and boils at 212 °F, so 180 Fahrenheit degrees separate the two points. Fahrenheit remains the everyday scale in the United States and a handful of other territories, for weather, ovens and body temperature. Each Fahrenheit degree is 5/9 of a Celsius degree, and 32 °F is the freezing point of water (0 °C).
The degree Celsius (°C) is named after the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius, who proposed a 100-degree scale in 1742. Water freezes at 0 °C and boils at about 100 °C at sea level, and the scale is now formally defined from the kelvin. A change of 1 °C equals a change of 1.8 °F, and 100 °C corresponds to 212 °F. Celsius is the everyday scale for weather, cooking and medicine in nearly every country.
How to convert fahrenheit to celsius with this tool

Fahrenheit to Celsius formula
The formula is °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. It is exact because the scales are defined so that 32 °F is 0 °C and every 180 Fahrenheit degrees equal exactly 100 Celsius degrees.
The reverse formula is °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 — or use the Celsius to Fahrenheit converter. Three worked examples:
- Body temperature of 98.6 °F: (98.6 − 32) × 5/9 = 37 °C
- An oven at 350 °F: (350 − 32) × 5/9 = 176.67 °C
- A comfortable room at 72 °F: (72 − 32) × 5/9 = 22.22 °C
Common Fahrenheit temperatures in Celsius
- Home freezer: 0 °F = −17.78 °C
- Water freezes: 32 °F = 0 °C
- Room temperature: 70 °F = 21.11 °C
- Hot summer day: 95 °F = 35 °C
- Water boils at sea level: 212 °F = 100 °C
- Moderate oven: 350 °F = 176.67 °C
Temperature differences convert without subtracting 32: a change of 9 °F is a change of 5 °C.
Fahrenheit to Celsius quick reference
The values people look up most often, worked out with the exact factor:
- −40 °F = −40 °C
- 0 °F = −17.78 °C
- 32 °F = 0 °C
- 68 °F = 20 °C
Quick tip: Subtract 30 and halve it for a rough estimate: 80 °F → 50 ÷ 2 = 25 °C, against the exact 26.67 °C.

Fahrenheit to Celsius FAQ
What is 100 °F in Celsius?
100 degrees Fahrenheit is 37.78 degrees Celsius: (100 − 32) × 5/9 = 37.78 °C.
How do I convert fahrenheit to celsius?
Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5/9. For example, (50 − 32) × 5/9 = 10 °C. To convert back, multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5 and add 32 — or use the Celsius to Fahrenheit converter.
What is 0 °C in Fahrenheit?
0 degrees Celsius is 32 degrees Fahrenheit, because (0 × 9/5) + 32 = 32 °F.
What does 50 °F equal in Celsius?
What counts as a fever in Fahrenheit and Celsius?
A temperature of 100.4 °F or higher is commonly treated as a fever: 100.4 °F = 38 °C. Normal body temperature is usually quoted as 98.6 °F, which is 37 °C. This is general information, not medical advice.
