Compress PDF to 1 MB

Bring large scans and reports under 1 MB for forms and email — the best quality that fits, without uploading.

Target size — the PDF will end up at or just under it
1 KB = 1,000 bytes here, so the result is under the limit whether a portal counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or upload is sent to a server.

Compress a PDF to 1 MB for upload forms and email

A 1 MB limit is common on tax and business registration portals, tender and court e-filing systems, employer career sites, university applications and offices that ask for documents by email with small attachment rules. The file in question is often a 10–40 page scan or a report full of photos that came out at 5–20 MB.

This page opens the compress PDF to 1 MB tool with the target selected. It tries a lossless optimisation first, so digital reports keep their text, and otherwise searches resolution and JPEG quality for the best result under 1,000,000 bytes. The preview and settings report help you check the result before you send it, and the file never leaves your browser.

How to compress a PDF to 1 MB

  1. Choose the PDF you need to send or upload.
  2. Keep “1 MB” selected. Grayscale is optional — at this size colour usually fits.
  3. Press “Compress to 1 MB” and follow the progress.
  4. Check the preview and the exact size, then download.

Compress PDF to 1 MB features

1,000,000 bytes or less

Windows shows such a file as about 977 KB, so it passes 1 MB checks that use either definition (1,048,576 bytes).

Handles long scans

Every page is rendered at the same resolution and quality, chosen so the whole document fits.

Lossless when possible

Digital PDFs that only carry extra baggage fit without becoming images.

What 1 MB holds

1 MB is 8 million bits. Ten scanned pages get 100 KB each — sharp colour at a good resolution. Twenty pages get 50 KB each, clear in grayscale, and forty pages 25 KB each, still fine for clean typed text. For a short document the tool can keep 150–200 DPI.

If 1 MB per file is not enough but the form takes several files, divide the document with Split PDF by Size, which measures each part so it stays under the limit.

Tips for 1 MB uploads and email

  • Emailing? Attachments grow by about a third when sent, so keep files well below any stated mailbox limit.
  • Delete pages nobody asked for, such as blank backs or duplicate copies, before compressing.
  • Need fixed levels instead of a target? Compress PDF offers Low, Recommended and Extreme.
  • Smaller target? Try Compress PDF to 500 KB or set any size on Compress PDF to a Target Size.

Compress PDF to 1 MB FAQ

How do I reduce a 5 MB PDF to 1 MB?

Drop the 5 MB file here, keep 1 MB selected and press “Compress to 1 MB”. The tool shows the result, for example 0.99 MB, with the DPI and JPEG quality it used and a preview of every page.

Why does Windows show my 1 MB file as about 977 KB?

Windows counts in units of 1,024 bytes. The tool keeps the file at or below 1,000,000 bytes, which Windows displays as roughly 976–977 KB. It passes a 1 MB limit either way.

Can a 50-page scan fit in 1 MB?

Sometimes. Fifty pages leave 20 KB per page, which works for clean typed pages in grayscale at around 72 DPI. Photos or coloured paper need more, and the tool will say if the result would not be readable.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Compression happens entirely in your browser and the PDF is never sent to a server.
