A pension calculator for central government employees
This pension calculator for central government employees follows the CCS (Pension) Rules, 2021 used for 7th CPC pensions. From your last basic pay and qualifying service it works out the basic pension, the commuted value of up to 40% of it using the official commutation table, your monthly pension after commutation with dearness relief, the retirement gratuity (DCRG) and the family pension.
A second mode is a plain commutation calculator for any pensioner — enter the basic pension from your PPO, including armed forces pensioners who can commute up to 50%. The rules were checked on 24 October 2026. It runs in your browser and is an estimate, not advice; your PPO is final.

How pension and commutation are calculated
Worked example: last basic pay ₹80,000 and 33 years of service. Basic pension = 50% × ₹80,000 = ₹40,000. Commuting 40% gives up ₹16,000 a month; at age next birthday 61 the lump sum is ₹16,000 × 12 × 8.194 = ₹15,73,248. Each month you then get ₹40,000 − ₹16,000 + dearness relief of 60% on the full ₹40,000 (₹24,000) = ₹48,000. The commuted ₹16,000 is restored after 15 years.
Retirement gratuity = ¼ × (₹80,000 + 60% DA = ₹1,28,000) × 66 half-years = ₹21,12,000, which is also the 16½-times limit.
| Age next birthday | Commutation value | Lump sum per ₹1,000 commuted |
|---|---|---|
| 55 | 8.627 | ₹1,03,524 |
| 58 | 8.446 | ₹1,01,352 |
| 60 | 8.287 | ₹99,444 |
| 61 | 8.194 | ₹98,328 |
| 62 | 8.093 | ₹97,116 |
| 65 | 7.731 | ₹92,772 |
Things to know before you commute
- Commutation becomes absolute the day after retirement if you apply before retiring; later applications use your age on the day it becomes absolute.
- Dearness relief stays on the full pension, so commuting reduces only the basic part of your monthly income.
- The commuted part comes back after 15 years; there have been demands to cut this to 12 years, but no change had been made as of October 2026.
- Additional pension starts at 80: 20% of basic pension, rising to 100% at 100.
- Check your in-service pay with the 7th Pay Commission salary calculator; for private-sector gratuity use the gratuity calculator.
Central Government Pension & Commutation Calculator (7th CPC) FAQ
How is pension calculated for central government employees?
At 50% of the last basic pay or of the average basic pay of the last 10 months, whichever is higher, once you have at least 10 years of qualifying service. It cannot be less than ₹9,000 or more than ₹1,25,000 a month.
What is the commutation factor at age 61?
8.194. Someone retiring at 60 has their 61st birthday next, so 8.194 applies: each ₹1 a month commuted gives ₹1 × 12 × 8.194.
Can defence personnel use this commutation calculator?
Yes, in “Commutation only” mode. Armed forces pensioners can commute up to 50% under the defence rules; enter the basic pension from the PPO and confirm the factor with your pension disbursing authority.
Is dearness relief cut after commutation?
No. DR is calculated on the original basic pension, before the commuted amount is deducted.
What is the maximum gratuity for central government employees?
₹25 lakh from 1 January 2024, when DA reached 50%, raised from ₹20 lakh by a DoP&PW order of 30 May 2024.
Does this apply to NPS employees?
No — the monthly pension rules apply to the old pension scheme. Gratuity is broadly similar for NPS members; use the NPS calculator for the pension side.
