Convert an address to latitude and longitude — or lat long to an address
This address to lat long converter finds the latitude and longitude of a street address, a building, a landmark, a PIN or ZIP code area or a town. Switch direction and it works the other way, as a lat long to address converter: type coordinates, or click a spot on the map, and it returns the nearest mapped address with its road, area, city, state, postcode and country.
Lookups use OpenStreetMap’s free Nominatim service, so the results come from open map data maintained by millions of volunteers. Coordinates are shown in decimal degrees (ready to paste into a phone’s map app) and in degrees, minutes and seconds, with copy buttons and a link to the point on OpenStreetMap. To keep the shared service fair, the tool looks up one address at a time, only when you press the button.
How to use the Address to Lat Long Converter
- Choose Address → lat long and type the address with the city and country, e.g. “India Gate, New Delhi”.
- Press Find coordinates or Enter. Up to five matches appear, the best first.
- Copy the latitude and longitude, or the degrees-minutes-seconds form.
- For the reverse, choose Lat long → address, type “28.6129, 77.2295” (or press My location) and press Find address.
- Press Show map to see the result on OpenStreetMap; click anywhere on the map to look up that spot.

How the lookup works
Your text is sent to Nominatim (nominatim.openstreetmap.org), the search engine of OpenStreetMap, which matches it against names and addresses in the map data and returns places with their coordinates. The reverse lookup asks for the nearest object with an address at street level and shows how far it is from your point, calculated on the WGS84 ellipsoid. Coordinates are in WGS84, the same datum GPS and phone maps use, given to six decimal places (about 10 cm).
Addresses are only as complete as the map: in many Indian cities house numbers are not mapped, so a full address may resolve to the road or locality instead — add a landmark, or search for the area and adjust on the map. Results can differ from a commercial map’s geocoder; for legal boundaries and property records rely on official surveys.
Why there is no bulk converter
The OpenStreetMap Foundation runs Nominatim on donated servers and its usage policy allows an absolute maximum of one request per second, forbids autocomplete-as-you-type, discourages bulk geocoding and requires results to be cached and the source to be credited. This tool follows all of it: requests go out only when you press a button, never faster than one per second across all your tabs, repeated searches are answered from the session cache, and the attribution is on the page. For thousands of addresses, run your own Nominatim server or use a commercial geocoding service.
To convert the coordinates you get into UTM, Plus Codes or other formats use the coordinate converter; to draw a circle around the place, the map radius tool; and to read your phone’s own GPS position, my location coordinates.
Address to Lat Long Converter FAQ
How do I convert an address to latitude and longitude?
Type the address with its city and country, press Find coordinates, and copy the latitude and longitude from the first result.
How do I find the address from lat long?
Choose Lat long → address, type the coordinates such as 28.6129, 77.2295, and press Find address. You get the nearest mapped address and its distance from your point.
Is this the same as address to lat long on Google Maps?
It does the same job with OpenStreetMap data instead. Coordinates are WGS84, so they paste straight into Google Maps, Apple Maps or a GPS.
Can I convert a list of addresses in bulk?
No. The free OpenStreetMap service does not allow bulk lookups from websites, so the tool does one address at a time.
Why is my house number not found?
House numbers are missing from the map in many areas. The result then points to the road or locality; add a landmark or adjust on the map.
Is my search private?
Your search text or coordinates go to OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim service to be answered, as with any online map. The tool does not send them anywhere else.
