Add reverb to a recording without a studio
Reverb is the sound of a space: the blur of reflections that follows a note in a bathroom, a church or a concert hall. A recording made in a quiet room, or on a phone, has almost none, so it can sound flat and close. This tool adds reverb to audio and saves the result as a new file. Use it for a voice-over, a vocal take, a guitar or piano recording, a podcast intro or a whole song.
Choose a Room for a small, natural space, a Hall for a long, dark, spacious tail, or a Plate for the smooth, bright, dense reverb of classic studio hardware. Then set how much reverb to mix in, how long it lasts, how long it waits before starting, and how dark or bright it is.
The reverb is made with convolution inside your browser. The impulse responses are generated by the tool, not copied from anyone’s recordings, so there are no licence questions. Your file is never uploaded.
How to use the Add Reverb to Audio
- Drop an audio file onto the box or click to choose one.
- Pick Room, Hall or Plate. The decay, pre-delay and tone jump to sensible starting values.
- Set Mix: 15–30% for voices, 30–50% for instruments, higher for special effects. Adjust Decay time, Pre-delay and Tone to taste.
- Press Preview 10 seconds to hear it from the marker on the waveform.
- Leave Let the reverb tail ring out on so the last note fades naturally, choose a format and press Add reverb.
Add Reverb to Audio features
Room, hall and plate
Three characters built from different early reflections, onset speed and high-frequency decay, so each sounds like its name rather than a re-labelled copy.
Mix, decay, pre-delay and tone
Mix is an equal-power blend from the original (0%) to only reverb (100%). Decay runs from 0.2 to 10 seconds. Pre-delay runs from 0 to 200 ms. Tone runs from dark to bright.
Generated impulse responses
Each impulse response is created from seeded noise shaped by an exponential decay, a darkening filter and sparse early reflections. It is the same every time, which makes results repeatable.
Tail option
Choose whether the file grows by the length of the tail or ends at the original length.
Clip protection
If the result would exceed full scale it is brought back under −0.3 dBFS with a limiter.
Five formats
MP3, M4A (AAC), WAV, FLAC or OGG Vorbis.
Choosing the right space
| Space | Decay | Pre-delay | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room | 0.4–0.8 s | 0–10 ms | Voice-overs, acoustic guitar, drums; adds closeness and realism |
| Hall | 1.8–3 s | 20–40 ms | Strings, piano, ballads, choirs; big and spacious |
| Plate | 1–2 s | 0–20 ms | Vocals and snare; smooth and bright with no obvious room |
| Cathedral-like | 5–10 s | 30–60 ms | Ambient music and effects; use a low mix |
What the controls mean
- Mix sets how much of the reverb you hear compared with the original. Too much makes words hard to understand.
- Decay time is the time for the reverb to fade by 60 dB (often called RT60). Longer decay sounds like a bigger space.
- Pre-delay is the silence before the reverb begins. A short gap keeps the voice clear in front of the space.
- Tone controls how fast high frequencies die away. Lower values sound warmer and darker, like a hall with soft furnishings.
Tips
- Reverb makes noise more obvious in the tail. Clean a noisy recording with the Audio Noise Remover first.
- Reverb adds low-frequency mud to bass-heavy tracks. Trim the low end with the Audio Equalizer afterwards if it sounds cloudy.
- Combine it with 8D Audio Converter for a circling sound with its own sense of space.
Add Reverb to Audio FAQ
How do I add reverb to an audio file online?
Drop your file onto this tool, choose Room, Hall or Plate, set the mix and decay, preview ten seconds and press Add reverb. Download the new file when it finishes.
Does it work with M4A and other formats?
Yes. M4A, MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC and WebM audio can be opened, and you can save as MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC or OGG.
Is it free, and is my file uploaded?
It is free with no sign-up or watermark. All processing happens in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
Why is the file longer after adding reverb?
The reverb continues after the last note. The file grows by about the decay time plus the pre-delay so the tail does not stop suddenly. Switch off the tail option to keep the original length.
Can I use real impulse responses of a room?
This tool only uses its own generated responses, so it works without any downloads or licences.
What is the difference between reverb and echo?
An echo is a clear repeat of a sound. Reverb is thousands of overlapping reflections that blend into a smooth tail.
