Yom Kippur fast times for your city

This page gives the Yom Kippur fast times for your city — candle lighting, the start of the fast at sunset and its end at nightfall — and the start and end of every other Jewish fast of the year: Tisha B’Av, Tzom Gedaliah, Asara B’Tevet, Ta’anit Esther, the Fast of the Firstborn and the 17th of Tammuz.

Communities differ about when nightfall comes and when a minor fast begins, so the page shows the choices: dawn at 16.1° or 72 minutes before sunrise, and nightfall by the angle of the Sun or a fixed number of minutes after sunset. The defaults match the widely used Hebcal calendar.

When the fasts begin and end

Yom Kippur (10 Tishrei) and Tisha B’Av (9 Av) are full fasts of about 25 hours: they begin at sunset on the evening before and end at nightfall the next day. On Yom Kippur candles are lit before sunset, and many begin the fast a little earlier still (tosefet Yom Kippur). The minor fasts — Tzom Gedaliah, Asara B’Tevet, Ta’anit Esther, the Fast of the Firstborn on the eve of Pesach and the 17th of Tammuz — run from dawn (alot hashachar) to nightfall of the same day.

Dawn is commonly taken as the Sun 16.1° below the horizon, or 72 minutes before sunrise. Nightfall (tzeit hakochavim) is when three stars appear: many use the Sun 8.5° below the horizon at the end of Shabbat and Yom Kippur, and earlier angles such as 7.083° or 6.45° at the end of other fasts; others wait a fixed 42, 50 or 72 minutes after sunset. The defaults here are Hebcal’s, and the automatic test compares 22 New York times for 2026 and 2027 with Hebcal to the minute.

Planning the day

Eat the pre-fast meal so that you finish before the start time shown, and plan to break the fast only after the end time. For festival candle-lighting and the whole year’s holidays see the Jewish holidays calendar; for weekly times see Shabbat times. The fast of the firstborn is usually discharged by attending a siyum on the morning of the eve of Pesach.
