Convert VTT to SRT for players, TVs and editors

This VTT to SRT converter turns WebVTT caption files into SubRip (.srt), the subtitle format that almost every desktop player, smart TV, phone and video editor accepts. Paste the captions or drop the .vtt file and the SRT appears immediately, numbered and correctly timed. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so nothing leaves your device.

WebVTT files are everywhere online: caption downloads from web players, transcripts exported with meeting recordings, and subtitles for online courses. But a media player on an older laptop, a television reading subtitles from a USB stick or a desktop video editor often wants SRT. This tool removes the WebVTT-only parts cleanly instead of leaving header text or stray tags in your subtitles.

How to use the VTT to SRT Converter

  1. Drop the .vtt file on the upload area or paste the captions into the WebVTT subtitles box. The WEBVTT header, NOTE comments and STYLE blocks can stay in — they are skipped.
  2. Check the result on the right: cues are numbered from 1, times use the SRT comma format, and the badges report overlaps or cues out of order.
  3. Use Time shift if the captions should appear earlier or later, and tick Strip formatting tags if your device shows tags as text.
  4. For an older TV or set-top box, tick Windows line endings and Add UTF-8 byte-order mark.
  5. Press Download .srt, or Copy to paste the result somewhere else.

VTT to SRT Converter features

Understands real-world WebVTT

Header metadata (Kind, Language), NOTE comments, STYLE and REGION blocks, cue identifiers, cue settings and hour-less times such as 00:01.000 are all read correctly.

Clean SRT tags

Voice spans (<v Speaker>), karaoke timestamps, ruby annotations and class spans are removed while italics, bold and underline stay. Colour classes such as <c.yellow> become <font color="yellow">.

Entities decoded

WebVTT escapes like &amp;, &lt; and &nbsp; turn back into the characters they stand for, so “Q&amp;A” reads “Q&A” in the SRT.

Positions kept where SRT can hold them

Cues placed at the top of the screen with line:0 get the widely supported {\an8} tag, and left- or right-aligned cues get {\an1} or {\an3}, so players that understand these tags place them the same way.

Encoding-safe

UTF-16 files saved by Windows tools are recognised by their byte-order mark, and the SRT is always written as UTF-8.

Where VTT files come from, and why you might want SRT

  • Caption downloads from web players are usually WebVTT. SRT is easier to edit in subtitle software and to load in desktop players.
  • Meeting recordings often come with a .vtt transcript, sometimes with speaker names in voice tags. Converting gives you a clean .srt to upload elsewhere or to burn into a highlight clip.
  • Online courses and HTML5 players store captions as WebVTT, while many video editors and subtitle programs import SRT most reliably.
  • Televisions and media boxes playing from a USB stick normally pick up an .srt file with the same name as the video, but not a .vtt.

Speaker names in transcripts

Some transcripts mark who is talking with a voice span such as <v Priya Sharma>Let’s start.</v>. SubRip has no equivalent, so the tag is removed and only the spoken words remain. If you want names on screen, type them into the text before converting, or use the Subtitle Converter to produce an ASS file, which stores each speaker in its Name field.

VTT to SRT Converter FAQ

How do I convert VTT to SRT?

Paste the WebVTT text or drop the .vtt file here. The SRT version appears instantly; press Download .srt. It works the same on phones, tablets and computers.

Will I lose anything converting VTT to SRT?

Only what SRT cannot store: CSS styling, regions, voice tags and karaoke timings. Text, timings, line breaks, italics, bold, underline, colours and top positioning are kept.

Why doesn’t my TV show the VTT subtitles?

Most televisions and media players look for an .srt file with the same name as the video. Convert the file, name it like the video (holiday.mp4 → holiday.srt) and copy both to the USB stick.

Do I need to delete the WEBVTT header first?

No. The header, metadata lines, NOTE comments and STYLE blocks are recognised and left out of the SRT automatically.

Is it safe to convert transcripts of private meetings?

Yes. The file is read and converted by your browser and is never uploaded to a server.

Can I convert the other way?

Yes — the SRT to VTT converter turns SubRip files into WebVTT for HTML5 video.
