A UCAS points calculator built on the official Tariff tables
This UCAS points calculator adds up your UCAS Tariff points from the tables UCAS publishes for each year of entry. Pick a qualification and a grade on each row — A levels, AS levels, the Extended Project (EPQ), BTEC Nationals, T Levels, Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers, IB subjects, the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales or the Irish Leaving Certificate — and the total updates as you go.
It covers both 2026 and 2027 entry. The two years match for almost every qualification, but UCAS re-banded the International Baccalaureate certificates for 2027 entry, so an IB Higher Level grade 5 is worth 32 points for 2026 entry and 40 for 2027. Everything runs in your browser; your rows are saved on this device only.
How to use the UCAS Points Calculator
- Choose your year of entry — the year you would start university.
- For each qualification, choose its type and the grade you have or expect. Use “Add qualification” for more rows and × to remove one.
- Read your total and the points for each row in the breakdown.
- Use the Tariff table below to look up every grade for one qualification, for example all BTEC Extended Diploma grade combinations.

UCAS points for A level grades
Each A level grade has a fixed value. Three A levels at A*AA give 56 + 48 + 48 = 152 points; ABB gives 128 and BBB 120. An EPQ is worth half an A level at the same grade.
| Grade | A level | AS level | EPQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| A* | 56 | — | 28 |
| A | 48 | 20 | 24 |
| B | 40 | 16 | 20 |
| C | 32 | 12 | 16 |
| D | 24 | 10 | 12 |
| E | 16 | 6 | 8 |
UCAS points for BTEC Nationals
BTEC grades are Distinction* (D*), Distinction (D), Merit (M) and Pass (P). The larger BTECs carry two or three grades. An Extended Certificate is the size of one A level, a Diploma the size of two and an Extended Diploma the size of three — so D*D*D* is 168 points, the same as A*A*A*.
| BTEC National | Top grade | Example | Lowest pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certificate | D* = 28 | M = 16 | P = 8 |
| Extended Certificate | D* = 56 | M = 32 | P = 16 |
| Foundation Diploma | D* = 84 | M = 48 | P = 24 |
| Diploma | D*D* = 112 | DM = 80 | PP = 32 |
| Extended Diploma | D*D*D* = 168 | DDM = 128 | PPP = 48 |
Scottish Highers, IB and how universities use points
A Scottish Higher is worth 33 points at grade A, 27 at B, 21 at C and 15 at D; an Advanced Higher is worth 56 at A, the same as an A* at A level. For the IB, UCAS gives points per certificate subject — for 2027 entry, Higher Level 7 = 56, 6 = 48, 5 = 40 and 4 = 32, and Standard Level is half of that — plus up to 12 each for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.
Many universities state offers as grades (for example AAB) rather than points, and those that use points often set their own rules: some ignore the EPQ or AS levels, some count only the best three A levels, and some need specific subjects. Treat the total as a guide and check each course page. To keep an eye on your coursework grades, try the grade calculator; for revision timing, the study plan generator.
