Convert TIFF to PNG without losing a pixel

TIFF and PNG are both lossless, so moving from one to the other shouldn’t cost a single pixel — and with this TIFF to PNG converter it doesn’t. The difference is where the files work: PNG opens in every browser, website builder, chat app and presentation tool, while TIFF mostly lives in scanners, print shops and archives. Converting gives you a picture you can use anywhere without degrading it.

Transparent areas in the TIFF stay transparent in the PNG, multi-page TIFFs are split into one PNG per page, and black-and-white fax pages come out crisp. Everything is decoded locally in your browser, so the files are never uploaded.

How to convert TIFF to PNG

    1. Drop .tif or .tiff files on the upload area, or click to choose them.
    2. Under Pages, choose Every page or First page only.
    3. Leave Keep transparent areas ticked to preserve transparency, or untick it and pick a fill colour.
    4. Review the page previews and untick anything you don’t need.
    5. Press Download on a card, or Download all as ZIP for the whole set.

    TIFF to PNG Converter features

    Truly lossless

Every decoded pixel is written to PNG unchanged. There’s no quality slider because there is nothing to lose.

    Transparency preserved

TIFFs with an alpha channel, straight or premultiplied, keep their transparent areas in the PNG.

    Multi-page support

Each page becomes its own numbered PNG; reduced-size previews hidden in the file are skipped.

    Fax and scan friendly

CCITT Group 3 and Group 4 bilevel pages are decoded into PNGs that stay small and razor-sharp.

    Wide compatibility

LZW, PackBits, Deflate and JPEG-compressed TIFFs in grayscale, palette, RGB or CMYK, at 8 or 16 bits per channel, all convert.

TIFF vs PNG at a glance

Because both formats are lossless, a TIFF converted to PNG looks exactly the same. File size can go either way: an uncompressed TIFF usually shrinks a lot, while an LZW TIFF and its PNG tend to be similar.

    Converting scans and faxes

Multi-page TIFF is still the default output of many office scanners and fax servers. Splitting it into PNGs makes each page easy to view on a phone, attach to a support ticket, paste into a document or run through OCR. For text pages PNG is the right target: it keeps letters sharp, and a 1-bit fax page stays small because PNG compresses large white areas very efficiently.

Want the pages back in a single file? Combine the PNGs with PNG to PDF. Need to trim scanner borders first? Use Crop Image on individual pages. And if you need to go the other way, PDF to TIFF creates multi-page TIFFs.

    Limits worth knowing

    • 16-bit TIFFs are saved as 8-bit PNGs, because browsers can only export 8 bits per channel.
    • CMYK images are converted to RGB without their embedded colour profile, so print colours are approximated.
    • Grayscale and palette images are saved as RGB PNGs. They look identical but can be somewhat larger than an optimised grayscale PNG.
    • BigTIFF, 32-bit floating-point, uncompressed YCbCr and separate-plane files aren’t supported — re-save them as standard 8-bit RGB TIFFs first.
    • Layers in Photoshop TIFFs aren’t read; the flattened composite image is converted.

    TIFF to PNG Converter FAQ

Is converting TIFF to PNG lossless?

Yes. Both formats are lossless, so the PNG contains the same pixels as the TIFF. The only change is that 16-bit images are reduced to 8 bits per channel.

Does the PNG keep the TIFF’s transparent background?

Yes, as long as “Keep transparent areas” is ticked. Untick it to fill transparent areas with a colour of your choice.

How do I convert every page of a TIFF to PNG?

Keep “Every page” selected and drop the file. You get one PNG per page, and “Download all as ZIP” saves them in page order.

Why is my PNG bigger than the TIFF?

The TIFF probably used very efficient compression such as Group 4 fax or JPEG, or it was grayscale while the PNG is saved as RGB. Run the PNG through the Image Compressor if size matters.

Can I open a TIFF in my browser without converting?

Only Safari displays TIFF images. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox you need to convert to PNG or JPG first — which is exactly what this page does, without uploading the file.

    Are my files uploaded?

No. The TIFF decoder runs in your browser, and the PNGs are created on your device.
