Solar subsidy calculator for India: PM Surya Ghar central subsidy
This solar subsidy calculator works out the central financial assistance (CFA) you can expect under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana for a rooftop solar system, then subtracts it — and any state top-up you enter — from your installer’s price to give the net cost, the share of the cost covered and a simple payback from your electricity tariff.
It handles the three cases people ask about: an individual household (any size, with the subsidy capped at 3 kW), a home in a special-category state or UT with its higher rates, and a group housing society or resident welfare association installing solar for common facilities such as lifts, lighting, pumps and EV charging. Rates were checked against the Government of India’s published CFA table in October 2026; the figures are estimates, not financial advice.
How to use the Solar Subsidy Calculator (India)
- Choose Individual household or Housing society / RWA, and your state category.
- Enter the system size in kW; for a society, also the number of houses.
- Enter your average monthly units and the vendor’s installed price per kW.
- If your state or DISCOM announced a top-up, choose its type (₹ per kW, fixed amount or % of cost), the amount and any limit.
- Check the generation per kW and your tariff, then read the subsidy, net cost and payback; copy the breakdown.
Solar Subsidy Calculator (India) features
Exact CFA slabs
₹30,000/kW for the first 2 kW, ₹18,000 for the third kW, nothing beyond 3 kW — so ₹78,000 is the most a household receives.
Special-category rates
₹33,000 and ₹19,800 per kW for the North-Eastern states, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Ladakh, Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep (up to ₹85,800).
RWA / GHS mode
₹18,000 per kW (₹19,800 special) on common facilities, limited to 3 kW per house and 500 kW in all.
State top-up field
Add a state or DISCOM subsidy as ₹ per kW, a fixed sum or a percentage, with an optional kW limit and maximum.
Net cost and payback
Subsidy is capped at the system cost; savings count only the units you use, at your tariff.
PM Surya Ghar subsidy rates (central financial assistance)
Source: Government of India annexure on central financial assistance for renewable energy schemes, published by PIB on 30 July 2024; the July 2025 amended guidelines kept these rates, and the Delhi government’s solar portal showed the same table in October 2026. Fractions of a kW are counted pro rata, as the words “or part thereof” in the table indicate.
| Segment | CFA | Special category states/UTs |
|---|---|---|
| Residential — first 2 kW (or part) | ₹30,000 per kW | ₹33,000 per kW |
| Residential — additional 1 kW (or part) | ₹18,000 per kW | ₹19,800 per kW |
| Residential — capacity beyond 3 kW | no additional CFA | no additional CFA |
| GHS/RWA common facilities incl. EV charging, up to 500 kW (3 kW per house) | ₹18,000 per kW | ₹19,800 per kW |
Worked examples
- 1 kW: ₹30,000. 2 kW: ₹60,000. 2.5 kW: ₹60,000 + 0.5 × ₹18,000 = ₹69,000.
- 3 kW: ₹60,000 + ₹18,000 = ₹78,000. At ₹60,000 per kW the system costs ₹1,80,000, so you pay ₹1,02,000. Generating about 360 units a month against 300 used, at ₹7 a unit, saves ₹25,200 a year — a payback of about 4 years.
- 5 kW: still ₹78,000 — the extra 2 kW earns no central subsidy, though a state scheme may add some.
- Society, 40 flats, 100 kW for common areas: 100 × ₹18,000 = ₹18,00,000.
What size to choose and how the subsidy is paid
The consumption guide published with the scheme suggests 1–2 kW for 0–150 units a month, 2–3 kW for 150–300 units and above 3 kW for more than 300 units; the calculator shows the band for your entry. Size to your use rather than the subsidy: the solar panel calculator works out kW, panels and roof area from your bill.
You apply on the National Portal for Rooftop Solar, choose a registered vendor, install, and the DISCOM fits a net meter and inspects the system; the CFA is then credited to your bank account. Exported units are settled by your state’s net-metering rules — see the net metering calculator.
Solar Subsidy Calculator (India) FAQ
How much subsidy will I get for a 3 kW solar system?
₹78,000 under PM Surya Ghar in general-category states: ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third. In special-category states and UTs it is ₹85,800.
Is there a subsidy for 5 kW or 10 kW rooftop solar?
The central subsidy stops at 3 kW for a household, so a 5 kW or 10 kW system also gets ₹78,000. Some states add their own subsidy — enter it in the top-up field.
How do I use this solar subsidy calculator for Gujarat or another state?
Gujarat is a general-category state, so the central rates are ₹30,000 and ₹18,000 per kW. If your state announces an extra subsidy, choose its type in State / DISCOM top-up and enter the amount from the state notification.
Can a housing society or RWA get the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
Yes, for common facilities including EV charging: ₹18,000 per kW, counting up to 3 kW per house and 500 kW in all.
Is the subsidy paid on the full system cost?
No — it is a fixed amount per kW, not a percentage. The calculator shows what share of your quote it covers; on a ₹1,80,000 3 kW system that is about 43 %.
Is this the official subsidy amount?
It uses the published rates, but the amount is fixed on the National Portal after inspection, and conditions such as domestically made modules apply. Treat the result as an estimate.
