Household carbon footprint calculator with sourced factors
This carbon footprint calculator estimates the greenhouse gas emissions of your household for a year, in kilograms or tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e). Enter the units on your electricity bill, your LPG cylinders or piped gas, the petrol, diesel or CNG you buy, bus, train and flight distances and your typical diet, and it shows the total, the figure per person and which part of your life contributes most.
Every number it multiplies by is printed under the result with its dataset and year — India’s grid factor from the Central Electricity Authority, UK factors from the government’s 2026 conversion factors and the US grid average from the EPA’s eGRID — so a student project, a school assignment or a family discussion can cite exactly where the figures come from. It is free and runs in your browser.
How to use the Household Carbon Footprint Calculator
- Choose your country to load its grid electricity factor (or pick Other and type your own), and enter the number of people at home.
- Enter monthly electricity units, LPG cylinders a year (14.2 kg each in India) and any piped gas in m³, kWh or therms.
- Enter the litres of petrol or diesel and kilograms of CNG you buy each month, and the household’s weekly bus and train kilometres.
- Add up the flight kilometres for everyone for a year; tick radiative forcing to include the non-CO₂ effects of flying.
- Pick the household’s typical diet, then read the total and the bars; copy the summary or download the CSV.
Household Carbon Footprint Calculator features
Country grid factors
India 0.675 kg CO₂/kWh (CEA FY 2025-26), UK 0.131 kg (DESNZ 2026), US 0.350 kg (eGRID2023), or any value you enter.
Cooking gas the Indian way
LPG by cylinders per year and piped natural gas in SCM, plus kWh and therms for UK and US bills.
Transport and flights
Fuel litres for cars and bikes, CNG, bus and rail kilometres, and flights with or without radiative forcing.
Diet from a peer-reviewed study
Six diet groups from Scarborough et al. (2014), from vegan to high meat.
Every factor shown
A table of the factors and datasets used, which changes with your country choice.
Emission factors and sources (as of October 2026)
The UK rows use the UK’s average biofuel blends (petrol 2.075, diesel 2.584 kg per litre); elsewhere the mineral-fuel factors are used, which slightly overstates fuel blended with ethanol. Bus and rail use UK averages everywhere, because comparable official figures for other countries are not published in the same form. The Indian grid factor covers CO₂ only.
| Item | Factor | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity, India | 0.675 kg CO₂/kWh | CEA CO₂ Baseline Database v22.0, August 2026 (FY 2025-26 weighted average) |
| Electricity, UK | 0.13096 kg CO₂e/kWh | DESNZ GHG conversion factors 2026 (published 11 June 2026) |
| Electricity, US | 0.34967 kg CO₂e/kWh | EPA eGRID2023, U.S. total 770.884 lb CO₂e/MWh |
| LPG | 2.939 kg CO₂e/kg | DESNZ 2026 |
| Petrol / diesel (non-UK) | 2.354 / 2.662 kg CO₂e/litre | DESNZ 2026, 100 % mineral fuel |
| Flights | 0.0842 kg CO₂e/passenger-km (0.1425 with RF) | DESNZ 2026, international average passenger |
Worked example: a family of four in India
250 units a month × 12 × 0.675 = 2,025 kg from electricity; nine 14.2 kg LPG cylinders = 376 kg; 25 litres of petrol a month = 706 kg; 30 km of bus travel a week = 158 kg; one Delhi–Mumbai return flight (2,280 km) = 192 kg; a vegetarian diet for four = 3.81 × 365 × 4 = 5,563 kg. The total is about 9.0 tonnes a year, 2.25 tonnes per person. Food dominates here; for a meat-eating household in the US, electricity and car fuel usually dominate instead.
Ways to cut the biggest items
- Electricity: rooftop solar covers most of a home’s units — the solar panel calculator sizes it and the solar subsidy calculator shows the PM Surya Ghar subsidy.
- Travel: a full car, a bus or a train beats driving alone; the flight carbon footprint calculator compares a specific flight with rail and car.
- Food: the study behind the diet factors found meat-eaters’ diets produce about twice the emissions of vegans’.
Household Carbon Footprint Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate my carbon footprint?
Multiply each activity by its emission factor — kWh of electricity by the grid factor, litres of fuel by the fuel factor, kilometres by the transport factor — add food from your diet, and sum for a year. This carbon footprint calculator does that with published factors and shows each one.
What is the carbon footprint of electricity in India?
The Central Electricity Authority’s CO₂ Baseline Database (version 22.0, August 2026) gives a weighted average of 0.675 tonnes of CO₂ per MWh for 2025-26, so each unit (kWh) from the grid emits about 0.675 kg of CO₂.
Is this carbon footprint calculator good for students?
Yes — it is free, needs no sign-up and lists every factor with its source and year, which makes it easy to cite in a project. Use the CSV download for charts.
How much CO₂ does an LPG cylinder produce?
A 14.2 kg domestic cylinder produces about 14.2 × 2.94 = 42 kg of CO₂e when burned, using the 2026 UK government factor for LPG.
Why does diet make such a big difference?
Food includes emissions from farming, land use and livestock methane. The UK study used here estimated 2.9 kg CO₂e a day for vegans and 7.2 kg for high meat-eaters, per 2,000 kcal.
Is the result exact?
No. It uses national averages; your supplier, car, flights and food choices vary. Use it to see the size of each part and track changes, not as a certified figure.
