Calculate CGPA from semester SGPAs
This SGPA to CGPA calculator combines the Semester Grade Point Average of each semester into your Cumulative Grade Point Average the way universities do it: every SGPA is weighted by the credits of that semester. Enter up to 14 semesters — the usual 8 for a four-year degree are already laid out — and the CGPA, the working and a running CGPA after each semester appear as you type.
Two extras answer the next questions students usually have. A target CGPA box tells you the average SGPA you need in the semesters still to come, and an optional percentage line converts the result with your university’s own published rule (VTU, SPPU, Anna, Delhi University, IPU, KTU, AKTU or GTU), linking the circular it comes from. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use the SGPA to CGPA Calculator
- Choose the scale of your SGPAs — out of 10 for most Indian universities.
- For each completed semester, enter its SGPA and its total credits from the grade card.
- For semesters still to come, enter only the credits and leave SGPA blank.
- Optionally type a target CGPA to see the SGPA you need from here on.
- Optionally pick your university to convert the CGPA to a percentage, then copy the result.
SGPA to CGPA Calculator features
Credit-weighted, exact
CGPA = Σ(SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ credits, with the arithmetic shown so you can check it against your grade card.
Running CGPA
A table with each semester’s credit points and the CGPA after it.
Target planner
The average SGPA needed over the remaining credits to reach a target — or a clear note that it is already secured or out of reach.
University percentage rules
The same sourced presets as the CGPA to percentage converter, including SPPU’s grade-banded rule; unconfirmed rules are not computed.
Simple average fallback
Leave every credit blank and it takes a plain average, which is right when all semesters carry equal credits.
How SGPA becomes CGPA
Each semester’s SGPA is itself a weighted average: course grade points × course credits, divided by that semester’s credits. The CGPA repeats the same step one level up. Multiply each SGPA by its semester credits to get the semester’s credit points, add the credit points of all semesters and divide by the total credits.
With the example above: 8.2 × 20 + 8.6 × 22 + 7.9 × 24 + 8.4 × 24 = 744.4 credit points over 90 credits, so the CGPA is 744.4 ÷ 90 = 8.27. A plain average of the four SGPAs would give 8.28 — close, but not the same, because the semesters carry different credits. When every semester has equal credits the two methods agree exactly.
Planning a target CGPA
If you already hold P credit points over C credits and R credits remain, a final CGPA of T needs (T × (C + R) − P) ÷ R as the average SGPA of the remaining semesters. In the example, a final 8.5 needs (8.5 × 170 − 744.4) ÷ 80 = 8.76. The answer is an average: a lower SGPA in one semester can be balanced by a higher one in another, weighted by their credits.
Converting the CGPA to a percentage
There is no single national formula. Anna University, AKTU, IPU, KTU (2019 scheme, from June 2023) and VTU’s 2022 scheme use CGPA × 10; VTU’s 2015–2021 schemes use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10; GTU uses (CGPA − 0.5) × 10; Delhi University’s 2019 PG CBCS rule is CGPA × 9.5; and SPPU’s 2019-20 CBCS rule depends on the final grade. The calculator converts the two-decimal CGPA shown on the grade card. Mumbai University’s current rule could not be confirmed from its own circulars, so it is not computed.
Limits
- Credits must be the credits counted for the SGPA. Some universities exclude audit, non-credit or mandatory courses from the CGPA.
- Repeated or improved courses can replace earlier grades, which changes past SGPAs; use the latest grade card.
- Lateral-entry students usually start from the third semester — enter only the semesters that count for you.
SGPA to CGPA Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by that semester’s total credits, add the results and divide by the total credits of all those semesters. For example, SGPA 8.0 over 20 credits and 9.0 over 22 credits give (160 + 198) ÷ 42 = 8.52.
Is CGPA the average of SGPAs?
Only when every semester has the same credits. Otherwise semesters with more credits count for more, so a simple average can be slightly off. Enter the credits to get the exact figure.
How do I calculate CGPA for 8 semesters?
Enter the SGPA and credits of all eight semesters in the rows above. The calculator adds the credit points of all eight and divides by the total credits, and shows the CGPA after each semester.
What SGPA do I need to reach my target CGPA?
Enter your completed semesters, the credits of the semesters still to come with SGPA left blank, and your target. The calculator shows the average SGPA you need over the remaining credits.
How do I convert my CGPA into percentage?
Pick your university in “Also convert to percentage”. Each rule comes from that university’s regulation or circular, linked under the result. For more options, including CBSE and custom formulas, use the CGPA to percentage converter.
Is my data saved?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
