How to read the layout: the cloth runs left to right, folded lengthwise — the top edge is the fold, the bottom edge the selvedges. ◆ = cut on the fold. Where a section holds two ◆ pieces, fold both selvedges to the middle so each piece has its own fold. Thin dashed lines across mark where to cut the cloth into sections.

No official standard. Saree lengths come from shop and weaver practice, not a standards body. Check the seller’s listing: some state the drape length, others the total with the blouse piece, and widths run about 44 to 48 inches. The blouse figure is an estimate from a simple layout.

Saree length guide in metres, feet, yards and centimetres

How long is a saree? This saree length guide converts the common lengths — the 5.5 m (about six-yard) drape, the 6.3 m saree that includes a blouse piece and the nine-yard nauvari — into metres, feet, yards, centimetres and inches, and lets you convert your own length. A second panel estimates whether the blouse piece you have is enough for your bust and sleeve style.

Saree lengths are shop and weaver conventions, not an official standard, so use the table as a guide and always read the seller’s listing. The tool runs in your browser and stores nothing.

How to use the Saree Length & Fabric Guide

  1. Pick a saree length from the list, or choose Custom length and enter yours in metres, yards, feet, centimetres or inches.
  2. Read the length in each unit and compare it with the table of common sarees.
  3. In the blouse box, enter your bust, blouse length, sleeve style and the length of blouse piece you have.
  4. Check whether the piece is enough, and look at the cutting layout.
  5. Copy the lengths if you want to keep them.

Common saree lengths

Shop listings and saree guides (Lashkaraa, Aza Fashions and Parisera, read 19 October 2026) describe the everyday six-yard saree as about 5 to 5.5 m of drape, usually with an extra blouse piece of around 0.8 m, so a saree sold with its piece is about 6.3 to 6.5 m in all. Nine-yard sarees such as the Maharashtrian nauvari are about 8 to 8.2 m long. Widths run from about 44 to 48 inches (roughly 112 to 122 cm).

These are retail norms that differ from seller to seller. There is no published height chart; most wearers drape the standard length, while taller people or those who like many deep pleats and a long pallu may prefer a saree of 6 m or more, and the nine-yard length is made for its own drape.

How the blouse piece is estimated

The estimate lays the back and front (cut on the fold), the sleeves and a neck facing on cloth folded lengthwise, the same model as the blouse measurement chart, and adds 5% before rounding up to the next quarter metre. A 0.8 m piece is common, but a larger bust, longer sleeves or a longer blouse can need 1 m or more, and prints and borders can need extra. Treat the verdict as a guide and check with your tailor. For a numbered measurement diagram use the blouse chart, and for kurtis the kurti measurement chart.

Buying tips

Check whether the listing gives the drape length or the total including the blouse piece, because 5.5 m and 6.3 m are often the same saree described two ways. Ask for the width if you plan to cut a blouse from the piece, since a 44 inch piece is narrower than a 48 inch one. Keep a few centimetres in hand for the fall and the pleats, and remember that heavy silk and stiff borders use more cloth in the pleats than light cotton or georgette.
