Cutting layout (estimate)

Front ◆Sleeve ◆Back ◆Sleeve ◆← 86 in →selvedges

How to read the layout: the cloth runs left to right, folded lengthwise — the top edge is the fold, the bottom edge the selvedges. ◆ = cut on the fold. Where a section holds two ◆ pieces, fold both selvedges to the middle so each piece has its own fold. Thin dashed lines across mark where to cut the cloth into sections. The second drawing, when shown, is the lining.

Typical kurta / kurti sizes (inches) from Libas’s published size chart (bust, waist, hips, shoulder; read 19 October 2026); armhole and upper-arm round are the typical blouse values for the same bust. Brands differ by 1–2 in. The highlighted column is the smallest size that covers your bust, waist and hip. The fabric figure is an estimate from a simple layout; tailors can save cloth on flared panels by fitting them head to toe, while yokes, gathers, kalis, borders and large prints need more.

Kurti measurement chart with a diagram and fabric calculator

Getting a kurti stitched starts with ten measurements. This kurti measurement chart shows each one on a numbered kurti measurement diagram — bust, waist, hip, shoulder, armhole, sleeve length, sleeve round, kurti length and the front and back neck depths — beside a typical XS–XXL size chart.

Enter your numbers (or start from a size), choose the style, sleeves and the width of your cloth, and the page draws a cutting layout and tells you how many metres to buy for 36, 44 or 58-inch fabric. You can then copy a tidy measurement list for your tailor. It works in inches or centimetres and runs entirely in your browser.

How to use the Kurti Measurement Chart & Fabric Calculator

  1. Pick Inches or Centimetres and a typical size to start from.
  2. Measure following the drawing and type your numbers; the matching line lights up as you type.
  3. Choose a Kurti length preset or type your own length from the shoulder.
  4. Under Design and fabric, set the fabric width, style (straight, A-line or flared), sleeves, seam allowance and any lining.
  5. Read the metres to buy, check the layout, and press Copy for my tailor.

How to take kurti measurements

Ethnic-wear size guides give typical kurti lengths for a wearer of about 5′4″: hip length 26–30 in, mid-thigh 30–35 in, knee length 36–40 in and calf length 44–49 in. Shorter or taller people should measure rather than rely on a preset.

  1. Bust — around the fullest part, tape level. Waist — at the narrowest part. Hip — around the fullest part of the seat.
  2. Shoulder — across the back from shoulder tip to shoulder tip.
  3. Armhole — around the arm through the armpit, comfortably loose.
  4. Sleeve length — from the shoulder tip to where the sleeve ends; sleeve round — around the arm at that point plus a finger.
  5. Kurti length — from the shoulder seam beside the neck, over the bust, down to where the hem should fall.
  6. Front and back neck depth — from the same shoulder point down to the neckline you want.

How much fabric for a kurti?

The calculator follows the usual consumption method (as in Online Clothing Study’s worked example): each panel is as long as the kurti plus 3 in for the hem and shoulder seam, sleeves are the sleeve length plus 2 in, and 5% is added for shrinkage and wastage. A straight panel cut on the fold needs a quarter of the larger of your bust (+¾ in ease) or hip (+½ in), plus the side seam; A-line and flared styles add 3 or 6 in at the hem.

Worked example — size M, knee length, three-quarter sleeves on 44-inch cloth: each half panel is 11 in, so front and back do not fit side by side on the 21½ in of doubled cloth and are cut one after the other (43 + 43 in), with a sleeve beside each. That is 86 in, or 2.18 m, plus 5% = 2.29 m — buy 2.5 m. On 58-inch cloth the panels sit side by side and 1.75 m is enough.

Typical kurti sizes

The size chart uses one published Indian brand chart (Libas: XS bust 34, waist 30, hip 36 in up to XXL 44 / 40 / 46 in, read 19 October 2026). Every brand cuts a little differently, so compare your own measurements with the brand’s chart before ordering. Kurti Measurement Chart & Fabric Calculator FAQ

What measurements are needed for a kurti?

Bust, waist, hip, shoulder, armhole, sleeve length, sleeve round, kurti length and the front and back neck depths. The kurti measurement diagram above numbers each one.

How many metres of fabric are needed for a kurti?

For a medium knee-length straight kurti with three-quarter sleeves, about 2.5 m of 44-inch fabric or 1.75 m of 58-inch fabric. Flared, longer or larger kurtis need more.

What is the standard kurti length?

Knee-length kurtis are usually 38–40 in, short kurtis about 30 in and calf-length ones 44–46 in for a wearer around 5′4″.

Which size should I choose if my bust and hip fall in different sizes?

Choose the size that covers the larger measurement — the chart highlights the smallest size that fits your bust, waist and hip together. A tailor can then take in the other area.

How is the kurti measured, body or garment?

The chart and calculator use body measurements; ease for movement is added in the fabric calculation.

Is the fabric estimate exact?

No. It is an estimate from a simple layout. Yokes, kalis, gathers, borders and large prints need more cloth, so check with your tailor.
