RTO code list and lookup for every state
This RTO code list tells you which Regional Transport Office a registration code belongs to — type DL-3, HR-26 or a full number such as MH 12 AB 1234 and it shows the office, its area and the state. It also works the other way: type a city or district to find its code, or choose a state to see all of its RTO codes in India’s list for that state.
The two-letter state codes are fixed by the central registration rules; the district offices come from a large public list (dated on the page) that changes as states open new RTOs. Everything runs in your browser.
How to look up an RTO code
- Type a code (
KA-03,dl3), a full number plate, a BH number or a place name into the search box. - Read the office and state at the top and the matching rows in the table.
- To list every RTO in a state — for example the RTO code list for Haryana — clear the search and pick the state, or click its code in the state table.
- Copy the result if you need it for a form.

Full state chart
All 36 state and union-territory codes, each a shortcut to that state’s list.
How to read an Indian number plate
A standard registration number such as MH 12 AB 1234 has four parts:
- MH — the state or union territory (Maharashtra).
- 12 — the RTO district code within the state (Pune).
- AB — the series letters the RTO is issuing; many states reserve letters for taxis, police or government vehicles.
- 1234 — the vehicle’s unique number in that series.
RTO code Delhi and other common lookups
- Delhi uses DL-1 to DL-13 for its zonal offices, for example DL-3 at Sheikh Sarai (South Delhi) and DL-8 at Wazirpur; search “DL” for the full list.
- Haryana has around a hundred codes; HR-26 is Gurugram North.
- Andhra Pradesh has used the single state-wide series AP-39 since February 2019 (AP-40 since 2023); older district codes still appear on older vehicles.
- Telangana changed its state code from TS to TG in 2024; vehicles registered earlier keep TS plates.
BH series numbers
The Bharat series, introduced by MoRTH notification G.S.R. 594(E) of 26 August 2021, is for people who move between states for work. A BH number is written YY BH #### XX: the year of first registration, the letters BH, four digits and one or two letters. It has no RTO code because the vehicle is not tied to one state; road tax is paid two years at a time — see the road tax calculator.
RTO Code List & Lookup FAQ
What is an RTO code?
The state letters and district number at the start of a vehicle registration number, such as KA-03. They identify the Regional Transport Office where the vehicle was registered.
How do I find the RTO code for my city?
Type the city or district name into the search box. The RTO code lookup lists every office whose location or jurisdiction mentions it.
What are the RTO codes in Delhi?
DL-1 to DL-13, one for each zonal office, such as DL-1 (Mall Road), DL-3 (Sheikh Sarai) and DL-9 (Dwarka). Choose Delhi in the state filter to see them all.
Can I find the owner of a vehicle from its RTO code?
No. The code only shows where the vehicle was registered. Owner details are held on the government Vahan database and are not shown here.
Why is my RTO code missing?
New offices are created and old ones split or move. The list is dated on the page; check the state transport department or Parivahan for the latest.
What do the letters after the RTO code mean?
They are the series the office is issuing, such as AB in MH 12 AB 1234. When a series runs out of numbers the next letters are used, and many states keep particular letters for taxis, buses, police or government vehicles, as the notes in the table show for some states.
Is this RTO code list official?
The state codes are fixed by law, but the district list is compiled from a public source, not issued by the government. Treat it as a guide.
