IFSC code validator and bank finder for NEFT, RTGS and IMPS
An IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is the 11-character code that routes NEFT, RTGS and IMPS transfers to one specific bank branch. This IFSC code validator checks that a code is well formed — four letters for the bank, a zero in the fifth place and six letters or digits for the branch — and identifies the bank from the first four letters using a built-in table of about 120 Indian banks: public and private sector banks, small finance and payments banks, foreign banks, large co-operative banks and the old codes of banks that have since merged.
Use it before adding a beneficiary, paying salaries from a payroll file or chasing a failed transfer: a code with a digit in the bank part, a wrong length or a merged bank’s prefix is flagged at once. The bulk mode validates a pasted list and exports CSV. Everything runs in your browser; no code is sent anywhere.
Branch names need the official lookup. RBI publishes the full IFSC directory of more than 1.6 lakh branches, and it changes every week. This tool deliberately does not embed it; it links you to RBI’s search so the branch name and address you rely on are current.
How to use the IFSC Code Validator & Bank Finder
- Type or paste the code in the IFSC code box; spaces and lower case are tidied automatically.
- Read the bank name, bank type and branch code, and the checklist of format rules.
- If the bank has merged, note the warning — ask the beneficiary for the new IFSC issued by the merged bank.
- Open RBI IFSC / MICR search to confirm the branch name and address for that code.
- For a list, switch to Bulk, paste one code per line, press Validate list and download the CSV.

IFSC format explained
Take SBIN0000300, the code of a State Bank of India branch:
| Position | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | SBIN | Bank code, always four letters (State Bank of India) |
| 5 | 0 | Reserved; currently always zero |
| 6–11 | 000300 | Branch code — six letters or digits assigned by the bank |
Common bank codes
The bank part of an IFSC is usually the first four characters of the bank’s SWIFT code, which is why Axis Bank is UTIB (its former name, UTI Bank) and Kotak is KKBK. When banks merge, the acquiring bank issues new IFSCs; the old codes stopped working for NEFT and RTGS after a transition period, which is why the invoice or payroll record you are checking may need updating.
| Code | Bank | Code | Bank |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBIN | State Bank of India | HDFC | HDFC Bank |
| ICIC | ICICI Bank | UTIB | Axis Bank |
| PUNB | Punjab National Bank | KKBK | Kotak Mahindra Bank |
| BARB | Bank of Baroda | INDB | IndusInd Bank |
| CNRB | Canara Bank | YESB | Yes Bank |
| UBIN | Union Bank of India | IDFB | IDFC First Bank |
| BKID | Bank of India | FDRL | Federal Bank |
| IDIB | Indian Bank | AUBL | AU Small Finance Bank |
| CBIN | Central Bank of India | AIRP | Airtel Payments Bank |
| IOBA | Indian Overseas Bank | IPOS | India Post Payments Bank |
Checking the branch and other details
- RBI’s IFSC/MICR search is the authoritative source; banks also list branch IFSCs on their websites and print them on cheque leaves and passbooks.
- MICR code (nine digits on the cheque) identifies the same branch for cheque clearing; it is separate from the IFSC and not validated here.
- IMPS and UPI accept the IFSC with an account number; UPI IDs do not need one.
- For foreign transfers you need a SWIFT/BIC code, not an IFSC. European account numbers use the IBAN validator; GST and PAN numbers have their own checks in the GSTIN validator and PAN card validator.
IFSC Code Validator & Bank Finder FAQ
Can this tool tell me the branch name from an IFSC?
No. It validates the format and names the bank, and it links to RBI’s official IFSC lookup for the branch name and address, which change weekly as branches open, close and merge.
What do the first four letters of an IFSC mean?
They identify the bank: SBIN is State Bank of India, HDFC is HDFC Bank, ICIC is ICICI Bank, UTIB is Axis Bank and so on. The IFSC code validator has about 120 of these codes built in.
Why is the fifth character always 0?
RBI reserved it for future use when the code format was designed; every current IFSC has a zero there, so anything else is a typing error.
My IFSC starts with ORBC, SYNB or ANDB. Is it still valid?
Those banks merged into Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank and Union Bank of India in 2020. The old IFSCs were retired after a transition period, so ask the account holder for the new code.
Does a valid format mean the branch exists?
Not necessarily. The format can be right while the branch code is wrong or closed. Confirm the branch on RBI’s lookup or with the beneficiary before sending money.
Is bulk validation safe for my vendor list?
Yes. The list is processed entirely in your browser and the CSV is built on your device; nothing is uploaded.
