Reverse text, words or lines — without breaking emoji
The Reverse Text tool turns any text backwards in one step. Write a whole message in reverse (“olleH”), flip the order of the words in each line, spell every word backwards while keeping them in place, reverse the order of lines in a list, or reverse each line on its own. The result updates as you type, ready to copy or download.
Most backwards text generators reverse raw code units, which tears emoji, flags and accented letters apart into broken symbols. This one reverses by visible character using the Unicode grapheme rules built into your browser, so 👋🏽, 🇮🇳 and “é” come out exactly as they went in. It also spots palindromes, and it works offline in your browser with nothing uploaded.
How to use the Reverse Text
- Type or paste your text into “Your text”.
- Pick a mode: Reverse text, Reverse word order, Reverse each word, Reverse line order or Flip each line. A short description under the buttons explains what each one does.
- Optionally tick “Keep brackets facing the right way” so “(hello)” becomes “(olleh)” rather than “)olleh(”.
- Read the result under “Reversed text”. If your text reads the same both ways, a “Palindrome!” badge appears.
- Copy or download the result, or press “Use result as input” to reverse it again in a different way.
Reverse Text features
Five ways to reverse
Whole text, word order, each word, line order or each line — covering puzzles, social posts, list reordering and string exercises.
Emoji-safe and accent-safe
Skin-tone emoji, family emoji joined with zero-width joiners, flags and letters with combining accents are treated as single characters.
Bracket mirroring
Optionally swaps ( ) [ ] { } < > and « » so reversed text still opens and closes brackets correctly.
Palindrome detection
Ignores spaces, punctuation, capitals and accents, so “Was it a car or a cat I saw?” is recognised.
Spacing preserved
Reversing word order keeps your original spacing and line breaks, so lists and poems keep their shape.
What each mode does
| Mode | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse text | Hello world | dlrow olleH |
| Reverse word order | Hello big world | world big Hello |
| Reverse each word | Hello world | olleH dlrow |
| Reverse line order | one ↵ two ↵ three | three ↵ two ↵ one |
| Flip each line | abc ↵ def | cba ↵ fed |
Why reversing emoji is harder than it looks
Computers store text as a sequence of code points, and many characters you see as one symbol are really several. “👋🏽” is a waving hand followed by a skin-tone modifier, a flag such as “🇮🇳” is two regional-indicator letters, and “👨👩👧” is three people glued together with invisible zero-width joiners. An accented letter can also be stored as a plain “e” followed by a combining accent mark.
A naive reversal flips those pieces too, so the skin tone lands on the wrong side, flags turn into different flags or letter boxes, and accents jump onto neighbouring letters. This tool first splits the text into grapheme clusters — the units a reader would call characters — using the browser’s Intl.Segmenter, and only then reverses them. The same technique is what you want when reversing strings in your own code.
Fun and practical uses
- Puzzles and games: hide a quiz answer or a spoiler in plain sight, or set a “read it backwards” challenge.
- Palindromes: test phrases such as “Never odd or even” or “A man, a plan, a canal: Panama”.
- Lists: “Reverse line order” turns oldest-first logs or rankings into newest-first in one click — Sort Lines can then sort them properly.
- Social posts: combine reversed text with Upside Down Text or the Fancy Text Generator for eye-catching bios and captions.
- Programming practice: check your own string-reversal function against the output, including emoji edge cases.
Reverse Text FAQ
How do I write text backwards?
Paste or type your text and keep “Reverse text” selected. The text appears backwards immediately — “Hello” becomes “olleH” — and you can copy it with one click.
How do I reverse the order of words in a sentence?
Choose “Reverse word order”. Each line keeps its words, but in reverse order, so “I love sunny days” becomes “days sunny love I”. Spacing and line breaks are preserved.
Why do emoji break in other text reversers?
Many emoji are made from several code points — a base emoji plus a skin tone, or several emoji joined by zero-width joiners. Reversing the code points scrambles them. This reverse text tool reverses whole grapheme clusters, so emoji and flags stay intact.
Can I reverse the order of lines in a list?
Yes. “Reverse line order” puts the last line first without changing the lines themselves. “Flip each line” does the opposite: it writes every line backwards but keeps their order.
Is reversed text the same as mirror text?
Not quite. Reversed text puts the characters in the opposite order but each letter still faces normally. True mirror writing also flips each letter, which needs special look-alike characters — the Upside Down Text tool uses a similar trick.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. The reversing happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server or saved.
