PPP Calculator — Purchasing Power Parity and Price Levels by Country

Convert any amount between countries by purchasing power parity and see how expensive each country is.

What the numbers mean

  • $100.00 in United States has about the same purchasing power as ₹1,983.89 in India (household-consumption PPP).
  • At the exchange rate it is ₹8,715.84. Prices in India are about 23% of those in United States, so money goes about 4.39× further there.
  • In international dollars (what the amount would buy in the United States): Int$ 100.
  • These are national averages for a broad basket. For salaries and living costs use the cost of living calculator.

A PPP calculator with price levels for 170 countries

This PPP calculator converts an amount of money from one country to another by purchasing power parity — what the same amount actually buys in each place — and sets it beside the plain exchange-rate conversion. It also shows each country’s price level against the United States and where it ranks, so you can see at a glance how expensive a country is.

The figures are the World Bank’s PPP conversion factors and official exchange rates for about 170 countries, mostly for 2025. Choose household-consumption PPP for everyday prices or GDP PPP for the whole economy. For comparing salaries and the cost of living, use the cost of living calculator. It all runs in your browser; it is an estimate, not financial advice.

How to use the PPP Calculator (Purchasing Power Parity)

  1. Enter an amount and the country where it is spent.
  2. Choose the country you want the equivalent for.
  3. Pick household-consumption PPP (everyday prices) or GDP PPP.
  4. Read the PPP equivalent, the value in international dollars, the exchange-rate value and both price levels.
  5. Open the price level ranking to see every country from most to least expensive; use Swap to reverse the comparison.

What purchasing power parity means

A PPP conversion factor is the number of units of a country’s currency needed to buy what one US dollar buys in the United States. An amount converts as amount ÷ PPP(from) × PPP(to); dividing by the first factor alone gives international dollars (Int$). The price level index is PPP ÷ exchange rate × 100: below 100 the country is cheaper than the United States at market exchange rates, above 100 it is dearer.

Worked example: with India’s 2025 household-consumption factor of 19.84 rupees per Int$ and an exchange rate of 87.16 rupees per dollar, US$100 buys about what ₹1,984 buys in India, while changing $100 at the bank gives ₹8,716. India’s price level is 19.84 ÷ 87.16 × 100 ≈ 23, so everyday prices average under a quarter of US prices at market rates.

Household or GDP PPP?

Household-consumption PPP prices what people buy — food, rent, transport, services — so it suits questions about living costs, spending and prices. GDP PPP also covers investment and government spending; economists use it to compare the size of economies and GDP per head.

Both are national averages from the International Comparison Program, extrapolated by the World Bank between benchmark years. They do not describe one city, and they do not track daily currency moves — for that use the currency converter. To adjust for prices over time rather than between countries, use the inflation calculator.

PPP Calculator (Purchasing Power Parity) FAQ

How does a PPP calculator work?

It divides the amount by the first country’s PPP conversion factor to get international dollars, then multiplies by the second country’s factor. The result is the amount with the same purchasing power in the second country.

What is a price level index?

The ratio of the PPP factor to the market exchange rate, times 100. A value of 50 means prices are about half US prices at market exchange rates.

Which are the most expensive countries?

Open the ranking: with 2025 household-consumption data, Switzerland and Iceland have the highest price levels, and countries such as Egypt, Nigeria and India the lowest.

Why does PPP differ from the exchange rate?

Exchange rates follow trade and capital flows, while local services such as rent, haircuts and transport are much cheaper in lower-income countries. PPP captures those local prices.

What is an international dollar?

A unit of account with the same purchasing power as one US dollar in the United States. Converting both countries’ amounts into international dollars puts them on the same footing.

Can I use this to compare salaries?

You can, but the cost of living calculator is built for salary comparisons.
