Convert ODT to DOCX for Microsoft Word users
This ODT to DOCX converter turns OpenDocument Text files from LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice or Collabora into Microsoft Word .docx documents. It runs LibreOffice’s own export filter inside your browser — the same one desktop LibreOffice uses for Save As → Word — so styles, headings, lists, tables, headers, footers, footnotes, comments and pictures cross over as faithfully as they can.
It’s the quick fix when a recruiter, publisher, client or teacher asks for “a Word file” and you write in LibreOffice, or when a colleague sent an .odt that Word on their side opens awkwardly. The document never leaves your computer, and you can convert many files in one go.
How to use the ODT to DOCX Converter
- Drop one or more
.odtfiles on the box above, or click it to choose them. - Keep LibreOffice · best layout for the most faithful Word file, or choose Basic · no download to rebuild just the content.
- Press Convert to DOCX. LibreOffice asks once before downloading its 79 MB converter, which your browser then keeps.
- Look over the Word preview: pages, word count and tables are shown for the selected file.
- Download the .docx, or every converted file as a ZIP.
ODT to DOCX Converter features
LibreOffice’s Word export
The same filter desktop LibreOffice uses, so Word gets real paragraph and character styles, lists and section settings.
Comments, notes and fields
Footnotes, endnotes, page-number fields, tables of contents and comments are carried into the Word file.
Basic mode
No download: headings, lists, tables, pictures and text styles are rebuilt from the document’s XML into a clean Word file.
See it before you send it
The new .docx is drawn page by page in the preview, the way Word will lay it out.
Many files at once
Convert a whole folder and download a ZIP.
On your device
Nothing is uploaded; the conversion runs in your browser tab.
ODT and DOCX: two standards for the same job
Both formats are ZIP packages of XML. ODT is part of the OpenDocument Format (ISO/IEC 26300), used natively by LibreOffice and OpenOffice; DOCX is Office Open XML (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500), Word’s default since 2007. They describe documents differently — ODT has a richer frame model, DOCX different list and section rules — so a converter has to translate, not just rename. LibreOffice has the most complete translation between the two.
Need the reverse? DOCX to ODT turns Word files into OpenDocument. For a version nobody can edit, use ODT to PDF.
What to check after converting
| Feature | Usually | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Styles, headings, lists | Carried over as Word styles | Heading numbering in very long documents |
| Tables | Carried over | Nested tables and tables inside frames |
| Text frames and drawings | Converted to Word shapes | Positions of floating frames and wrap |
| Fonts | Names kept; Word substitutes any it lacks | Liberation and DejaVu fonts may not exist on the reader’s PC |
| Fields, index, table of contents | Carried over | Update fields in Word (F9) once |
Before you convert
- If you use LibreOffice’s own fonts (Liberation Serif, Liberation Sans), Word users may see Times New Roman or Arial instead — the widths match, so the layout holds.
- Remove a document password in Writer (File → Properties → Security) first; protected files can’t be opened here.
- The basic converter leaves out headers, footers and footnotes — use LibreOffice when those matter.
- LibreOffice needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox and about 1.5 GB of free memory; Safari uses the basic converter. Afterwards, DOCX to TXT can pull out the plain text.
ODT to DOCX Converter FAQ
How do I convert ODT to DOCX for free?
Drop your .odt file above and press Convert to DOCX. The first LibreOffice conversion downloads the converter once (79 MB); the basic converter needs no download. No sign-up or watermark.
Will Microsoft Word open the converted file?
Yes. The output is a standard Office Open XML .docx that opens in Word 2007 and later, Word for Mac, Word Online, Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice.
Will my formatting survive?
With LibreOffice, almost all of it: styles, lists, tables, headers, footers, footnotes, comments and pictures. Floating frames and very complex layouts may need a small touch-up in Word.
Is my document uploaded?
No. LibreOffice runs inside your browser and the file is converted on your device.
Can I convert ODT to DOCX on a phone?
Yes, on Android with Chrome or Firefox — LibreOffice needs about 1.5 GB of memory, so recent phones work best. On iPhone the basic converter is used because Safari lacks cross-origin isolation.
What is the difference between ODT and DOCX?
Both are ZIP packages of XML. ODT is the OpenDocument standard (ISO/IEC 26300) used by LibreOffice; DOCX is Office Open XML (ISO/IEC 29500) used by Word. Converting translates styles and layout from one model to the other.
