International vs Indian number system
Both systems use the same words up to 99,999. After that the international system groups digits in threes, while the Indian system groups the last three digits and then pairs: 1 lakh = 1,00,000 = 100,000 and 1 crore = 1,00,00,000 = 10 million. Modern Indian usage continues with crore (1,000 crore, 1 lakh crore); the traditional arab (100 crore, equal to a billion) and kharab (100 arab) are less common.
| Value | International | Indian |
|---|---|---|
| 100,000 (1,00,000) | one hundred thousand | one lakh |
| 1,000,000 (10,00,000) | one million | ten lakh |
| 10,000,000 (1,00,00,000) | ten million | one crore |
| 1,000,000,000 | one billion | one hundred crore (one arab) |
| 1,000,000,000,000 | one trillion | one lakh crore |
Hindi numbers 1–100 (ginti)
Hindi numbers from 11 to 99 are irregular: each has its own word, so they cannot be built from tens and units like English. The nines are the trickiest — उनतीस (29), उनतालीस (39), उनचास (49), उनसठ (59), उनहत्तर (69), उन्यासी (79), नवासी (89) and निन्यानवे (99) — and 100 is सौ. Larger numbers add हज़ार (thousand), लाख, करोड़, अरब and खरब. The chart was checked against two independent references, Superprof’s Hindi number list for the Devanagari and Wikipedia’s Hindustani numerals article for romanisation and variants. Where they differ, the “Also written” column lists the other spelling, such as छह/छः, उनचालीस for 39 and the -नबे forms for 91–98. Sanskrit numbers are not included because they could not be verified here.
Date of birth in words and cheque amounts
To print the words on your own blank cheque, use the cheque writing tool. For invoices see the invoice generator; for Roman numerals use the Roman numeral converter.
- Dates: the day is an ordinal (fifth), the month a name, the year a cardinal: “Fifth March Two Thousand Six”. Some forms want “Two Thousand and Six”; use the year style option.
- India: start a cheque with “Rupees”, finish with “Only”. US: dollars in words, cents as 50/100. Make sure words and figures match; banks generally treat the words as the amount.
- Decimals are read digit by digit after “point”; ordinals change only the last word (twenty-one → twenty-first).
