An online marketplace fee calculator for any selling platform
This online marketplace fee calculator works out the fees, payout and real profit on a sale on resale, handmade, auction and live-selling platforms. Instead of hard-coding one site’s fee table, it models how marketplace fees are built — a listing fee, a final value or transaction percentage, a per-order fee, payment processing as a percentage plus a fixed amount, promoted-listing fees — and lets you say what each percentage is charged on: the item price, the item plus shipping, or the total including sales tax.
Add your item cost, the shipping label you buy and your return rate, and it shows the expected profit per sale, your margin, the break-even item price and the price you need for a target margin. It works in dollars, pounds, euros, rupees and other currencies, and handles US sales tax collected by the marketplace as well as UK and EU VAT inside your price.
How to use the Online Marketplace Fee Calculator
- Choose a fee structure to start from — resale, handmade or live selling — or Blank, and pick your currency.
- Enter the item price, the shipping you charge, any sales tax added at checkout and any VAT or GST included in your price.
- Check every fee against your platform’s current fee page: the percentages, the fixed amounts and what each one is charged on. Editing any fee marks the structure as “Custom”.
- Enter your item cost, the shipping label and packaging cost, and your return rate with the extra cost of each return.
- Read the profit, payout, break-even price and the price for your target margin, and copy the breakdown if you need it.
Online Marketplace Fee Calculator features
Fee base for every percentage
Some platforms charge on the item price only, others on item + shipping, and some on the total including sales tax. Choose the base for the main fee and for processing separately.
Sales tax and VAT done right
US sales tax collected by the marketplace passes straight through but can still attract fees; VAT inside a UK or EU price is taken out before profit.
Three example structures
Starting points for resale, handmade and live-selling platforms, clearly marked as examples with illustrative numbers.
Tax on fees
Add VAT or GST charged on the platform’s own fees, and say whether you reclaim it.
Break-even and target price
A solver finds the item price for zero profit and for your target margin, with every percentage fee re-applied.
How marketplace fees and profit are calculated
Because some fees are charged on the tax-inclusive total, a higher sales-tax rate slightly raises your fees even though the tax itself is not your money.
- Buyer pays = item price + shipping charged + sales tax. In the default example: $40 + $6 + 8% = $49.68.
- Each fee = its percentage × its base + its fixed amount. Transaction fee 6.5% × $46 = $2.99; processing 3% × $49.68 + $0.25 = $1.74; listing fee $0.20. Total $4.93.
- Payout = item + shipping − fees (the marketplace keeps the sales tax for the tax authority) = $41.07.
- Profit on a kept sale = payout − VAT in your price − item cost − shipping label − packaging = $21.27.
- Expected profit = (1 − return rate) × kept-sale profit − return rate × loss per return. With 3% returns costing $15.80 each: $20.16, a 45% margin.
Where fees hide
- Fees on shipping: if the final value fee includes shipping, charging $10 shipping on a $6 label adds fees on the full $10.
- Fixed fees on cheap items: $0.30 + $0.40 of fixed fees is 7% of a $10 sale but under 1% of a $100 one.
- Promoted listings and offsite ads can take a larger share than the base fee on the orders they bring in.
- Currency conversion and payout fees apply when you sell or are paid in another currency; add them under “Other fees”.
- Returns: some platforms refund the final value fee on a return and some do not. Put what you lose in “Extra cost per return”.

Online Marketplace Fee Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate marketplace selling fees?
Add up each fee: listing fee + final value % × its base + payment processing % × its base + fixed fees + any ad fee. The base matters — check whether your platform charges on the item price, item plus shipping, or the total including tax. This marketplace fee calculator does it for you.
Are the preset fees accurate for my platform?
They are illustrative examples of common fee structures, not live rates. Platforms change fees often and vary them by category, seller level and country. Copy the current numbers from your platform’s fee page.
Do marketplaces charge fees on sales tax?
Some do. Where a platform calculates its final value or processing fee on the total the buyer pays, sales tax is in the base even though the platform remits the tax. Choose “Item + shipping + tax” as the base to model that.
What is my payout from a sale?
Payout is what the platform sends you: item price plus shipping charged, minus all platform fees. Your profit is payout minus the item cost, the shipping label, packaging, VAT you owe and losses on returns.
How do I find a break-even price?
The calculator searches for the item price at which expected profit is zero, re-applying every percentage fee as the price changes. Below that price each sale loses money.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is an estimate for pricing decisions. Your sales tax, VAT and income tax position depends on where you are registered and sell; check with an accountant.
