LPG cylinder calculator: how long your gas will last
This LPG cylinder calculator estimates how many days a cooking gas cylinder lasts from the burners you use and how long they run, and how much gas is left in a cylinder you have weighed. It also turns your refill price into a monthly cost, refills per year, a price per kilogram and a cost per kWh of gas energy you can compare with electric cooking.
It is set up for the 14.2 kg domestic cylinder used across India, with 5 kg, 19 kg and 47.5 kg presets and a custom size for any other cylinder.
How to use the LPG Cylinder Usage Calculator
- Choose the cylinder — 14.2 kg for a domestic refill — or type its net gas weight.
- For each burner, enter the gas use in g/h from the stove label, the hours it runs a day and the average flame (full flame is 100 %).
- Leave Full cylinder selected, or choose Weigh it and enter the weight on a scale and the tare weight stamped on the cylinder.
- Enter your refill price to see the monthly and yearly cost.
- Read the days, check the steps, and copy the summary.
LPG Cylinder Usage Calculator features
Days a cylinder lasts
Gas per day from each burner’s g/h, hours and flame setting, divided into the gas in the cylinder.
Gas left by weight
Weight on the scale minus the tare (TW) stamped on the cylinder gives the gas inside and the percentage left.
Refills and cost
Refills a year, cost per month, price per kg and per kWh from your own refill price.
Energy content
Kilograms to kWh using the IPCC default net calorific value of LPG (47.3 MJ/kg), editable.
Cylinder presets
14.2 kg domestic, 5 kg, 19 kg and 47.5 kg commercial, or any custom size.
How the days are calculated
Gas per day = Σ burner g/h × hours × flame share, then days = kg of gas × 1,000 ÷ g per day. With a large burner rated 170 g/h used for 1½ hours and a small 120 g/h burner for an hour, both at about 70 % flame, a household uses 178.5 + 84 = 262.5 g a day, so a full 14.2 kg cylinder lasts 14,200 ÷ 262.5 ≈ 54 days, a little under seven refills a year.
Domestic gas stoves certified to IS 4246 must state their gas consumption in g/h and the burner ratings in kcal/h. If you only know the kcal/h, g/h ≈ kcal/h × 4.1868 ÷ calorific value in MJ/kg — about 155 g/h for a 1,750 kcal/h burner at 47.3 MJ/kg — but makers may use a different calorific value, so the g/h figure is better.
Checking how much gas is left
Weigh the cylinder with its valve on a bathroom or luggage scale and subtract the tare weight stamped on the collar or handle (marked TW). An empty 14.2 kg cylinder typically weighs about 15–16 kg (an IndianOil media note gives about 15.5 kg, so about 29.7 kg full) — but use the TW on your own cylinder, because it varies. A reading of 22.6 kg with a 15.5 kg tare means 7.1 kg of gas, half a cylinder. Check the seal and weight when a refill is delivered; delivery staff are meant to carry a scale.
| Gas per day | 14.2 kg lasts | 5 kg lasts |
|---|---|---|
| 150 g | 95 days | 33 days |
| 250 g | 57 days | 20 days |
| 350 g | 41 days | 14 days |
| 500 g | 28 days | 10 days |
Making a cylinder last longer
- Use lids and a pressure cooker, and turn the flame down once food boils — a blue flame wider than the pan base wastes gas.
- Keep burners clean: a yellow, sooty flame means poor combustion.
- Soak rice and dals, and keep ingredients ready before lighting the burner.
- Compare the cost per kWh with an induction cooktop using the electricity bill calculator, and see your cooking emissions in the carbon footprint calculator.
LPG Cylinder Usage Calculator FAQ
How many days does a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder last?
For a family of three or four cooking twice a day, often 45–60 days. Divide 14,200 g by your daily use: at 262.5 g a day it lasts about 54 days. The LPG cylinder calculator works it out from your burners and hours.
How do I check how much gas is left in my cylinder?
Weigh the whole cylinder and subtract the tare weight (TW) stamped on it. The difference is the gas left in kg; divide by 14.2 for the share of a domestic cylinder.
What is the weight of a full 14.2 kg cylinder?
About 29–31 kg in total: 14.2 kg of gas plus the empty cylinder, which is about 15–16 kg. The exact empty weight is stamped on each cylinder.
How much LPG does a burner use per hour?
Check the stove label: stoves made to IS 4246 state gas consumption in g/h. Big burners use more than small ones, and a simmer uses much less than full flame.
How many kWh are in 1 kg of LPG?
About 13.1 kWh, using the IPCC default net calorific value of 47.3 MJ/kg (47.3 ÷ 3.6). On a gas stove only part of that reaches the pan.
Is this exact?
No. Cooking habits vary every day; use it to plan refills and spot unusually high use, which can also be a sign of a leak worth checking.
