Freelancer tax calculator for India: presumptive scheme or actual profit

Most freelancers, consultants, doctors, designers and developers in India can pay tax on a presumed profit instead of keeping full books: 50% of gross receipts for specified professions (the old section 44ADA) or 6% / 8% of turnover for a small business (44AD). From tax year 2026-27 both live in section 58 of the Income-tax Act, 2025. This freelancer tax calculator works out the tax both ways — presumptive and on your actual profit — so you can see what the scheme saves.

It applies the eligibility limits with the 5% cash test, the new-regime slabs with the ₹12 lakh rebate and its marginal relief, surcharge, 4% cess and TDS, and shows when advance tax is due. Results are informational estimates, not tax advice.

How to use the Freelancer Tax Calculator India (44ADA / 44AD)

  1. Choose Profession / freelancing or Business, and the tax regime.
  2. Enter gross receipts for the year and how much of it came in cash.
  3. Add your real expenses, any other income and the TDS your clients deducted.
  4. Read the tax under the presumptive scheme, the comparison with tax on actual profit, and the advance-tax due date.
  5. If your profit is really higher than 50% (or 6% / 8%), type it in “Profit you declare” — the higher figure is taxed.

Limits with the cash test

Presumptive taxation limits for tax year 2026-27

Source: section 58(2) of the Income-tax Act, 2025, as enacted (table items 1 and 3). Receipts by account-payee cheque, bank transfer, UPI or card on or before the return due date count as digital. The scheme is for residents — individuals, HUFs and partnership firms, not LLPs.

WhoReceipts limitHigher limit (cash ≤ 5%)Profit taxed
Specified professions (44ADA)₹50 lakh₹75 lakh50% of gross receipts, or more
Business (44AD)₹2 crore₹3 crore6% of digital + 8% of other turnover, or more

Worked example: ₹30 lakh of freelance fees

A software consultant receives ₹30,00,000, all by bank transfer, spends about ₹6,00,000 and earns ₹50,000 of interest. Under 44ADA the profit is 50% = ₹15,00,000; with interest the taxable income is ₹15,50,000. New-regime tax is ₹20,000 + ₹40,000 + ₹52,500 = ₹1,12,500, plus 4% cess = ₹1,17,000.

On actual profit (₹24,00,000 + ₹50,000) the tax would be ₹3,27,600, so the scheme saves ₹2,10,600 and the consultant needs no detailed books. The whole ₹1,17,000 is due as advance tax by 15 March 2027.

Who counts as a professional?

The 50% scheme covers the professions listed for books of account: legal, medical, engineering, architecture, accountancy, technical consultancy, interior decoration, and notified ones such as information technology, film artists, company secretaries and authorised representatives. Other freelancers — writers, tutors, YouTubers, marketers — are usually treated as a business, where the 6% / 8% rule of 44AD applies; get advice if you are unsure.

Rules, advance tax and what is left out

  • Declaring less than the presumptive profit needs books of account and, when income is above the basic exemption limit, a tax audit. Leaving the scheme after using it bars you from it for the next five years.
  • Advance tax on presumptive income is due in one go by 15 March; otherwise 15%, 45%, 75% and 100% by 15 June, September, December and March. Plan payments and interest with the advance tax calculator.
  • Under section 58 no separate expenses or depreciation are claimed against presumptive profit. Commentators differ on how far its bar on deductions reaches, so check before claiming old-regime 80C or 80D.
  • Not covered: GST, capital gains, salary alongside freelancing (use the income tax calculator), goods-carriage owners (44AE) and non-residents.
