How it was worked out

  1. Pip value of 1 lot = 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10.00
  2. In USD: your account is in USD, so no conversion → $10.00 a lot
  3. × 1.00 lots = $10.00 a pip
  4. Lot size = $100.00 ÷ (25 pips × $10.00) = 0.4 → 0.40 lots (loss at the stop $100.00)

India: under FEMA, residents may undertake forex transactions only with authorised persons and for permitted purposes, and trade electronically only on RBI-authorised platforms or on recognised exchanges (NSE, BSE, MSE) — exchange-traded currency futures and options in INR pairs (USD-INR, EUR-INR, GBP-INR, JPY-INR) and the EUR-USD, GBP-USD and USD-JPY crosses. Leveraged trading on offshore websites and apps is not permitted; the RBI publishes an Alert List of unauthorised forex platforms (RBI press release, 7 September 2022, and later updates).

Calculations only — not investment advice; markets carry risk. Contract sizes, pip sizes for gold and silver, and margin rules differ between brokers and exchanges — check your platform’s contract specification. Leveraged trading can lose more than the margin you put up.

Forex pip calculator: what one pip is worth in your currency

A pip is the smallest standard price step of a currency pair — 0.0001 for EUR/USD, 0.01 for USD/JPY. What a pip is worth depends on the pair, the trade size and the currency your account is in. This forex pip calculator gives the pip value for any lot size in your account currency, the margin the trade needs at your leverage, the profit or loss for a move of any number of pips, and the lot size that keeps a stop-loss within the risk you choose.

Presets cover the major pairs, yen crosses, gold (XAU/USD) and silver, plus the exchange-traded currency futures available in India: USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR, JPY/INR and the EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY crosses with their 1,000-unit contracts. Prices are typed in by you — nothing is fetched, and nothing leaves your browser.

How to use the Forex Pip Value & Lot Size Calculator

  1. Choose the pair or instrument, or Another pair or CFD… to type the base and quote currency yourself.
  2. Pick your account currency and type the current price from your platform.
  3. Check the pip size and the contract size of one lot (they fill in from the preset; brokers can differ, especially for gold).
  4. Enter the trade size in lots, your leverage and a price move in pips.
  5. If your account currency is neither currency of the pair, enter today’s conversion rate when asked.
  6. Under Lot size for your risk, enter the balance, the risk % and the stop in pips to get the lot size.

Pip value formula with examples

Pip value = pip size × contract size × lots, in the quote currency. If your account is in the quote currency that is the answer; if it is in the base currency, divide by the price; otherwise multiply by the rate from the quote currency to yours.

Pair, 1 standard lotPipIn the quote currencyIn a USD account
EUR/USD at 1.08500.0001$10$10.00
USD/JPY at 150.000.01¥1,000$6.67 (÷ 150)
GBP/JPY at 195.000.01¥1,000$6.67 at USD/JPY 150
XAU/USD (100 oz)0.01$1$1.00
USD/INR futures (1,000 USD)₹0.0025 tick₹2.50— (INR account)

Lot size, margin and leverage

A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot 10,000 and a micro lot 1,000. Margin is the position value divided by leverage: one lot of EUR/USD at 1.0850 is worth $108,500, so at 30× leverage it needs $3,616.67. Leverage caps for retail clients are set by each regulator and are often lower for gold and minor pairs than for the majors.

For the lot size, decide the money at risk first. A $10,000 account risking 1% ($100) with a 25-pip stop on EUR/USD risks $250 per standard lot, so the size is 0.40 lots. The position size calculator does the same for shares, futures and crypto; convert amounts with the currency converter.

XAUUSD lot size and gold pip value

Most brokers define one lot of XAU/USD as 100 troy ounces, so a $1.00 change in the gold price moves one lot by $100. Whether a “pip” is $0.01 or $0.10 is a broker convention: at 0.01 a pip is worth $1 a lot; at 0.10 it is $10. Set the pip size to match your platform and the calculator follows. For physical jewellery prices use the gold rate calculator.

Forex Pip Value & Lot Size Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate pip value?

Multiply the pip size by the contract size and the number of lots. For one standard lot of EUR/USD: 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10. Convert to your account currency if it differs from the quote currency. The forex pip calculator does the conversion for you.

How much is 1 pip on 0.01 lot?

On EUR/USD and other USD-quoted pairs, $0.10. On USD/JPY at 150, about $0.067. On XAU/USD with a 100-ounce lot and a $0.01 pip, $0.01.

What lot size should I use?

Work back from your risk: lot size = (balance × risk %) ÷ (stop in pips × pip value of one lot). Many traders risk 1–2% per trade.

How is the lot size for XAUUSD calculated?

Use the same formula with gold’s contract: with a 100-ounce lot and a $0.01 pip, each pip is $1 a lot, so a $100 risk with a $5 (500-pip) stop allows 0.20 lots.

Is forex trading legal in India?

Residents may trade only permitted instruments — exchange-traded currency derivatives in INR pairs and the EUR-USD, GBP-USD and USD-JPY crosses on NSE, BSE or MSE, or on RBI-authorised platforms. Remitting money to offshore leveraged forex sites is not permitted under FEMA.

Why does the pip value change with the price?

When your account is in the base currency, or a third currency, the quote-currency pip value has to be converted at the current rate, so it moves as prices move.
