Excel Formula Builder (Free Formula Generator)

Pick a task, fill in the cells and get the Excel or Google Sheets formula with every argument explained.

Argument separator
Numbers and cell references stay as typed; other text gets quotes.
Paste it into a cell. Change the cell references to match your sheet.
ArgumentValue in your formulaWhat it does
logical_testB2>=50The condition Excel checks, here “B2” is at least 50.
value_if_true"Pass"Returned when the condition is true.
value_if_false"Fail"Returned when the condition is false.
  • Available in: Every version of Excel and Google Sheets.
  • Microsoft documentation: IF function.

Formulas are assembled in your browser from templates. No AI, no account, and nothing you type is uploaded. The tool builds formula text; it does not open or calculate your spreadsheet.

Excel formula generator for common functions

This Excel formula generator is a guided builder for the formulas people look up most: IF and IFS, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX and MATCH, SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, AVERAGEIFS, TEXT, DATEDIF and splitting text at a delimiter. Choose a task, fill in the cells and ranges from your sheet, and the finished formula appears, ready to copy into a cell. It works for Excel and Google Sheets, needs no login and costs nothing.

It is a template-based builder, not an AI. That makes the result predictable: the same inputs always produce the same formula, the syntax comes from the Microsoft documentation for each function, and a table under the formula explains what every argument does so you learn the function as you use it.

How to use the Excel Formula Builder

  1. Pick the task from the list, such as “VLOOKUP, find a value in the first column”.
  2. Fill in the fields. Type cell references as you see them in your sheet (A2, $E$2:$G$100). Plain text is wrapped in quotes for you; numbers and references are left alone.
  3. Choose the comma or the semicolon separator to match your regional settings.
  4. Optionally tick “Wrap in IFERROR” to return your own value instead of an error.
  5. Press Copy and paste the formula into a cell. Read the argument table and the notes for limits and version support.

Excel Formula Builder features

Plain-language argument table

Each argument is shown with its official name and a one-line explanation, using the wording of the function’s documentation.

Regional separators

Excel installs set to many European languages expect semicolons between arguments. One switch rewrites the whole formula.

Checks before you paste

The VLOOKUP builder warns when the column number is outside the table, and the criteria builders explain how operators such as >= are quoted.

Version notes

Every formula says which versions support it, so you do not send an XLOOKUP to a colleague on Excel 2016.

Which lookup should you use?

If your colleagues use older Excel, choose INDEX and MATCH. Otherwise XLOOKUP is the simplest. Microsoft documents each one: VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP and INDEX.

FunctionStrengthLimit
VLOOKUPWorks everywhere and is widely understood.Searches only the first column and cannot return a column to its left.
INDEX + MATCHAny direction, any version. Two functions, so slightly harder to read.
XLOOKUPAny direction, exact match by default, a built-in “not found” result.Excel 2021, Microsoft 365 and Google Sheets only.

Criteria in SUMIFS and COUNTIFS

A criterion that includes a comparison must be text, so >100 becomes ">100". To compare with a cell, join the operator and the reference: ">="&F1. A bare number or cell is used as an equals test, and * and ? work as wildcards in text. In SUMIFS the sum range comes first, which differs from the older SUMIF.

Dates and text

DATEDIF returns whole years, months or days between two dates. Microsoft advises against its “MD” unit because it can return wrong results, so the “years, months and days” option here uses EDATE for the day count instead. The TEXT function turns a value into text in a chosen pattern, which is handy for joining a date to a sentence but means the result can no longer be added up.

Excel Formula Builder FAQ

Is this Excel formula generator really free?

Yes. There is no login, no limit and no upload. The formula is built in your browser.

Does it use AI?

No. It uses fixed templates for each function, so results are repeatable and match the Microsoft syntax. If you need a formula for an unusual task, start with the closest builder and adapt it.

Why does my Excel want semicolons?

The argument separator follows the regional list separator. In locales that use a comma as the decimal mark, Excel uses a semicolon between arguments. Switch the separator above.

Will these formulas work in Google Sheets?

Yes for all builders except TEXTSPLIT, which Google Sheets replaces with SPLIT. Sheets also supports XLOOKUP, IFS, SUMIFS and DATEDIF.

Why does VLOOKUP return #N/A?

The value is not in the first column, the match type is exact and the text differs by a space or a number-stored-as-text, or the table range does not start at the lookup column. Wrapping the formula in IFERROR hides the error but not the cause.

Can it check my existing formula?

No. It builds new formulas from your inputs. It does not read your spreadsheet or evaluate formulas.
