A diaper calculator for count, cost and size
How many diapers will my baby need, and what will they cost? This diaper calculator estimates diapers (nappies) by age from typical daily counts, then turns them into packs to buy and a monthly and total cost using your own pack price. Plan the first year from birth, or any stretch of months from your baby’s current age, in $, £, ₹ or €.
A second tab works as a diaper size calculator: enter your baby’s weight in lb or kg to see the typical size. The daily counts are typical figures, not a rule — every baby is different, so you can change each one. The pack price and count start as clearly marked examples; type in what you actually pay.
How to use the Diaper Calculator
- Enter your baby’s age now in months (0 for a newborn or before birth) and how many months to plan for.
- Enter the diapers per pack and the price per pack you pay, and choose the currency.
- Check the diapers a day by age boxes and change any that do not match your baby.
- Read the total, packs to buy, cost a month and the breakdown table by age.
- Open Size by weight to find the usual size for your baby’s weight.

How many diapers a day?
There is no official standard for diaper use; these are typical counts quoted by paediatricians in parenting guides, and add up to about 2,600 in the first year — inside the 2,500–3,000 range usually given. Newborns need changing after most feeds and every dirty diaper; the number falls as feeds space out and the bladder grows. Worked example: from birth for 12 months at the default rates means 1 month at 10 a day, 2 months at 9, 3 months at 7 and 6 months at 6: (10 + 18 + 21 + 36) × 30.44 days ≈ 2,587 diapers; at an example $25 for 80, that is 33 packs and about $808, or roughly $67 a month.
| Age | Typical diapers a day | Used here |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1 month | 10–12 | 10 |
| 1–3 months | 8–10 | 9 |
| 3–6 months | 6–8 | 7 |
| 6–12 months | 5–7 | 6 |
| 12–24 months | 5–6 | 5 |
| 24–36 months | 4–5 | 4 |
Saving money on diapers
- Compare the price per diaper, not per pack — the unit price calculator does it for any two packs.
- Do not stockpile one size: babies move up quickly in the first months. Buy a few packs of the next size at a time.
- Bigger boxes and subscriptions are often cheaper per diaper; store-brand diapers usually cost less.
- Cloth diapers cost more at the start but less over time, especially if reused for a second child. Count washing in the cost.
- Wipes, creams and swim diapers are extra; add them to your budget separately.
Wet diapers as a feeding check
Counting diapers also tells you whether a baby is getting enough milk. The NHS says to expect 2–3 wet nappies in the first 48 hours and at least 6 heavy wet nappies every 24 hours from about day 5, with soft yellow poos in breastfed babies. Fewer wet diapers, dark urine, a dry mouth or a sunken soft spot need a same-day call to your midwife, health visitor or doctor.
For the wet and dirty nappies to expect on each day of the first month, see the newborn diaper chart. For feeding amounts, see the breast milk calculator and the baby feeding chart.
Diaper Calculator FAQ
How many diapers does a newborn use per day?
Typically about 10–12 in the first month, sometimes more. The calculator uses 10 by default — change it if your baby uses more.
How many diapers will I need for the first year?
Usually around 2,500 to 3,000. At the typical rates used here it is about 2,600; your own figures may be higher or lower.
How do I work out diaper cost per month?
Enter the price and count of the pack you buy. The diaper calculator divides price by count for the cost per diaper and multiplies by the diapers you will use each month.
What size diaper for my baby’s weight?
Use the Size by weight tab. Typical US bands: Newborn up to 10 lb, Size 1 8–14 lb, Size 2 12–18 lb, Size 3 16–28 lb, Size 4 22–37 lb, Size 5 27 lb and up, Size 6 35 lb and up. Brands differ.
Should I size up if my baby is between sizes?
If you see leaks, red marks on the legs or tummy, or the tabs barely meet, try the larger size.
Are these numbers medical advice?
No. They are typical estimates for planning. If your baby has fewer wet diapers than usual, contact your midwife, health visitor or doctor.
