Make any message big enough to read across the room
This big text tool shows what you type in the largest letters that fit the box, and it can fill your whole screen. Type a message, pick colours, and tap Show full screen. The font size re-fits every time you edit the text or rotate the device, so a two-word cheer and a three-line notice both fill the space.
People use it for race-day and gym signs, a pace or lap-target board for a training group, a message to hold up to the camera on a video call, a note for a driver or a venue, and a quick notice in a window. For timing a workout, see the stopwatch or the Tabata timer.
How to use the Big Text Display
- Type your message. Press Enter for a new line.
- Choose the colours, font and alignment. Add ALL CAPS, Mirror or Scroll if you want them.
- Press Show full screen to fill the display. The screen is asked to stay awake. Press Close or Escape to leave.
- Turn the phone sideways for a wider, bigger line of text.
Big Text Display features
Auto-fit sizing
The tool searches for the largest font size at which the whole message fits, so short messages get huge letters and long ones shrink only as much as needed.
Full screen that works on phones
Uses the browser's full-screen mode where it exists, and a full-viewport layer where it does not, such as on iPhone.
Readable colour themes
White, yellow, green and red on black, black on white and white on navy, all with strong contrast.
Mirror and scroll
Flip the text to read it in a mirror or windshield; or let a single line scroll across like a ticker, at three speeds.
Private
The message never leaves your browser, and nothing is saved.
How the sizing works
The tool starts with a trial font size and checks whether the text still fits inside the box without overflowing sideways or running past the bottom. It then halves the range of sizes it is searching, about eleven steps in all, and keeps the biggest size that fits. It re-runs this when you type, change the font, resize the window or enter full screen. Long words are never broken in the middle: a single long word shrinks until it fits on one line.
Scroll mode puts the message on one line at the height of the box and moves it across at a steady speed. If your device is set to reduce motion, the tool shows the message still instead of scrolling, and says so.
| Use | Suggested setup |
|---|---|
| Cheer sign or race support | Yellow or white on black, 2 to 4 words, full screen |
| Message for a driver or camera | Mirror on if read in a mirror or through glass |
| Notice in a window | Black on white, Scroll for several sentences |
| Training group board | Large digits, monospace font |
Tips and limits
Keep messages short: five or six words at most for a distance read. Use dark text on light backgrounds in bright sun and light text on dark in a dim room. Full screen keeps the screen awake where the browser supports it, but battery saver modes may still dim or lock the display. Extremely large type can reveal a few pixels of antialiasing; this is a screen limit rather than a bug.
Big Text Display FAQ
How do I show big text on my phone screen?
Type your message, choose the colours and tap Show full screen. Rotate the phone to landscape for larger letters on wide messages.
Can the text scroll like a ticker?
Yes. Tick Scroll to move one line of text across the screen. Choose slow, medium or fast.
Why does the text shrink when I add more words?
The tool always picks the largest size that fits everything, so more words need a smaller font.
What does Mirror do?
It flips the text horizontally so it reads correctly when seen in a mirror or through the back of a window.
Does it work offline?
After the page has loaded, yes. Nothing is sent anywhere and no account is needed.
Why does the screen not stay awake on my device?
Some browsers do not support the Screen Wake Lock feature, or block it in low-power mode. Change your device's screen timeout in its settings.
