Limits as published on 24 October 2026 (sources below). The count includes spaces and punctuation; in search ads every Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as 2. This checks length only — it cannot tell you whether an ad will pass a platform’s review. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Check ad copy against search and social character limits

This ad copy character limit checker is a writing grid for responsive search ads: up to 15 headlines of 30 characters, 4 descriptions of 90 characters and two display-URL paths of 15 characters each, every field with its own live count and progress bar. Fields turn amber near the limit and red when they go over, a summary line tells you whether the ad has the minimum three headlines and two descriptions, and a preview shows one way the ad could be assembled.

Below the grid, a second panel checks social ad text — primary or introductory text, headline and description — against the figures the platforms publish for a Facebook Feed image ad and a LinkedIn single image ad. Everything is counted in your browser, and the counting uses the same grapheme rules as the character counter: an accented letter or an emoji with a skin tone is one character, as you see it.

How to use the Ad Copy Character Limit Checker

  1. Type your domain and the two optional path words that appear after it in the display URL.
  2. Write at least three headlines (up to 15 — open “Headlines 4–15” for the rest) and at least two descriptions.
  3. Watch each counter: amber means more than 90% of the limit, red means over it. The summary line names anything missing, over the limit or duplicated.
  4. Read the preview and press “Next combination” to see your headlines in a different order.
  5. Choose a social ad format and paste your primary text, headline and description to compare them with that platform’s recommendations.
  6. Press “Copy all” for a labelled list of every field, or “Download CSV” to paste the copy into a spreadsheet or bulk editor.

How the characters are counted

Spaces, punctuation and symbols all count. In the search ad fields, each visible character counts as 1, except characters from double-width scripts — Chinese, Japanese kana and kanji, Korean Hangul and full-width forms — which count as 2, following the rule on the responsive search ad help page. That is why a headline can look short in Japanese and still be over the limit.

In the social panel the count is plain visible characters. LinkedIn states that its 150-character recommendation for introductory text includes spaces, emojis and punctuation. Meta’s figures are recommendations for how much text displays well; longer text is allowed but may be shortened behind a “See more” link.

How the preview is put together

A responsive search ad is assembled automatically from the headlines and descriptions you supply: up to three headlines can show in the headline position, with one or two descriptions below. The preview shows the first combination; “Next combination” rotates the order so you can check that every headline reads well next to the others. It is an illustration, not a pixel-exact copy of a results page, which varies by device and position.

  • Write headlines that make sense in any order — each one should work on its own.
  • Avoid saying the same thing twice; near-duplicates waste a slot.
  • Put the strongest benefit or offer in at least one short headline, because shorter headlines leave room for a second and third.
  • Use the paths for words that describe the landing page, such as a product category.

Ad Copy Character Limit Checker FAQ

What is the character limit for search ad headlines?

Each headline in a responsive search ad can be up to 30 characters, and you can enter between 3 and 15 of them. Descriptions can be up to 90 characters, with 2 to 4 per ad, and each of the two display-URL paths up to 15.

Do spaces count towards ad character limits?

Yes. Spaces, punctuation and symbols all count as characters. Double-width characters such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean count as two each in search ads.

Why does my Japanese or Chinese headline show double the characters?

Search ad limits treat every double-width character as two, so 15 kanji or Hangul syllables already use the full 30-character headline. The counter applies that rule automatically.

How long should Facebook ad text be?

For a Facebook Feed image ad, Meta’s ads guide recommends 50 to 150 characters of primary text and a headline of about 27 characters. Longer text is allowed but may be truncated.

What are the LinkedIn ad text limits?

For a single image ad, LinkedIn recommends up to 150 characters of introductory text (3,000 maximum), a headline of up to 70 characters (200 maximum) and a description of about 100 characters (300 maximum).

Does staying within the limits mean my ad will be approved?

No. This tool checks length only. Ads are also reviewed against each platform’s editorial and advertising policies, such as rules on punctuation, capitalisation and claims.

Is my ad copy saved?

Your last ad is kept in this browser’s local storage so it is there when you come back. It is never uploaded; use “Reset example” to clear the fields back to the sample.
