A free word guess game: five letters, six tries

This word guess game hides a five-letter English word and gives you six tries to find it. After each guess the tiles change colour: green means the letter is in the right spot, yellow means it is in the word but somewhere else, and grey means it is not in the word at all. It is a word-guessing game in the style made popular by the daily word puzzles that took over social media in 2022.

There are two ways to play. The daily puzzle is the same word for everyone on the same date, so you can compare results with friends and keep a streak going. Unlimited mode gives you a fresh random word whenever you want one. Hard mode, high-contrast colours, statistics and a share button that copies your result as a grid of coloured squares are all built in.

It runs in your browser with no account; your progress and statistics are stored only on your device.

How to use the Word Guess Game

  1. Choose Daily puzzle or Unlimited. Tick Hard mode before your first guess if you want the extra challenge.
  2. Type any five-letter word with your keyboard or the on-screen keys and press Enter. Use the delete key to fix a typo.
  3. Read the colours: green letters are placed correctly, yellow letters belong elsewhere in the word, grey letters are not in it. The on-screen keyboard keeps track for you.
  4. Use the clues to narrow down the word. You have six guesses in total.
  5. When you finish, press Share result to copy an emoji grid (no letters, so no spoilers) and paste it anywhere. In Unlimited mode press New word to play again.

Word Guess Game features

Daily puzzle for everyone

The day’s word comes from a fixed permutation of the answer list indexed by the date (no word repeats until all 2,000 have been used), so every visitor gets the same word on the same calendar day, with a new one at your local midnight.

Unlimited play

Practise as much as you like with random words from the same list. Unlimited games keep their own statistics, separate from the daily streak.

Hard mode

Any green letter must stay in place and any yellow letter must be used in later guesses. Like the original rule, it can only be switched on or off before the first guess.

Stats, streaks and sharing

Games played, win percentage, current and best streak, and a guess distribution chart. Sharing copies a spoiler-free grid such as “Word Guess #291 4/6”.

Satisfying animations

Letters pop in as you type, tiles flip one by one to reveal their colours, an invalid word shakes its row, and a winning row bounces. Reduced-motion settings turn all of this off.

Accessible colours

High-contrast mode swaps green and yellow for orange and blue, which most colour-blind players find easier to tell apart, and every tile and key has a spoken label.

How repeated letters are coloured

Repeated letters follow the standard rule. Exact matches are marked green first. Then each remaining letter of your guess is marked yellow only while the answer still has an unused copy of it; extra copies turn grey. For example, if the answer is ABIDE and you guess SPEED, the first E is yellow, the second E is grey (the answer has only one E), and the D is yellow.

Strategy tips

  • Open with a word that has three vowels or very common consonants — SLATE, CRANE, RAISE and STARE are popular for good reason.
  • Use your second guess to test five new letters rather than shuffling the first word; information beats luck early on.
  • Remember that letters can repeat. If you are stuck, consider a double letter such as in SPOON, ERROR or LLAMA.
  • Plurals and past tenses (words ending in a plain -S or -ED) are never answers, so do not spend a late guess on them; endings such as -CH, -SH, -TH and -ER are common.
  • If you are truly stuck, the five-letter word helper lists every word that still fits your colours — but try on your own first.

Where the words come from

The 2,000 possible answers are common everyday base words chosen automatically from the WordNet 3.1 lexical database (by how many meanings each word has and how often it appears in the Moby Thesaurus II), with plurals, past tenses and offensive words removed. About 4,450 further words, including plurals and verb forms, are accepted as guesses but never chosen as answers. Lists made this way are good but not perfect: occasionally a word you know will be missing, or an answer will feel unusual. If you enjoy word games, the anagram solver and hangman game are worth a look.

Word Guess Game FAQ

Is the daily word the same for everyone?

Yes. The daily puzzle is chosen from the date alone, so everyone who plays on the same calendar day gets the same word. A new puzzle starts at midnight in your own time zone.

How many times can I play?

The daily puzzle can be played once per day. Unlimited mode lets you play as many random words as you like, one after another.

What does hard mode change?

Every letter revealed as green must stay in that position, and every yellow letter must appear in each later guess. The game rejects guesses that ignore a clue and tells you why.

Why is my word not accepted?

Guesses must be real five-letter English words from the game’s list of about 6,450 words. Proper nouns, abbreviations and some rare or very new words are not included.

How do I share my result without spoilers?

Press Share result after the game. It copies the puzzle number, your score and a grid of coloured squares — but no letters — so you can paste it into a chat or post.

Are my stats saved?

Yes, in your browser’s local storage on this device. Clearing your browser data or switching device starts the statistics from zero.
