A video thumbnail generator that finds the best frame

A good thumbnail is a single sharp, well-lit frame that sums up the video. This free video thumbnail generator lets you scrub through any MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM file frame by frame and save the exact moment you want as a full-resolution JPG, PNG or WebP image.

Not sure which moment to use? Press “Suggest best frames” and the tool samples frames across the whole video, scores each one for sharpness, exposure, contrast and colour, skips fades and motion blur, and shows the six strongest candidates. Everything happens in your browser, so even unreleased videos stay private.

How to use the Video Thumbnail Generator

  1. Drop a video onto the box or click to choose one.
  2. Drag the slider, use the arrow buttons to step one frame at a time, or type an exact time such as 1:23.5.
  3. Optionally press “Suggest best frames” and click a suggestion to jump to it.
  4. Choose the size — original, half size or YouTube 1280 × 720 — and the image format and quality.
  5. Press “Download thumbnail”. The file name includes the timestamp of the frame.

Video Thumbnail Generator features

Frame-accurate scrubbing

Frames are decoded with WebCodecs through Mediabunny (MPL-2.0), so you get the exact frame at a timestamp — not a blurry seek preview.

Automatic best-frame suggestions

Each candidate is scored on the variance of the Laplacian (sharpness), mean brightness, contrast and the Hasler–Süsstrunk colourfulness measure.

YouTube-ready output

The YouTube preset makes a 1280 × 720 image and lowers JPG or WebP quality if needed to stay under YouTube’s 2 MB thumbnail limit.

Handles vertical video

Fit a 9:16 phone clip into 16:9 by cropping, by letterboxing, or over a blurred copy of the frame.

Full resolution

Original size keeps every pixel — 3840 × 2160 for 4K video — with rotation from phone recordings applied.

No upload, no watermark

The video never leaves your device and images are saved without any branding.

What makes a frame a good thumbnail?

  • Sharpness: fast motion and camera shake blur many frames. The sharpness score measures how much fine edge detail a frame contains.
  • Exposure: frames near pure black or white — fades, flashes, scene transitions — make poor thumbnails and are pushed down the list.
  • Contrast and colour: thumbnails are viewed tiny on phones; a punchy, colourful frame stands out more than a flat grey one.
  • A clear subject: faces with visible eyes, a product, or one strong object. The scores can’t judge meaning, so treat the suggestions as a shortlist and choose yourself.

Video Thumbnail Generator FAQ

How do I get a thumbnail from a video?

Open the video here, move the slider to the moment you want (or use “Suggest best frames”), pick a size and format and press “Download thumbnail”.

How does the tool choose the best frames?

It checks up to 48 frames spread across the video and scores each for sharpness (variance of the Laplacian), brightness, contrast and colourfulness. Very dark, very bright and flat frames are penalised, and suggestions are spaced apart so they differ.

Will the thumbnail be full quality?

Yes. “Original size” saves the decoded frame at the video’s full resolution. PNG is lossless; JPG at 92% looks the same in practice and is much smaller.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a file under 2 MB. The YouTube preset produces exactly that.

Can I make a thumbnail from a vertical phone video?

Yes. Use original size for a 9:16 cover, or the YouTube preset with “Fit with blurred background” to place the vertical frame in a 16:9 image.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding and image encoding run entirely in your browser.
