Default rates are reported 2024 averages paid to master owners of independent releases (Duetti, January 2025) — estimates, not prices. Your real rate depends on listeners’ countries, free vs paid plans and each month’s revenue. Type your own rates from your statements.

A streaming royalties calculator with honest, editable rates

This streaming royalties calculator estimates what music streams earn and how much of it reaches you. Enter streams per service, keep or replace the per-1,000-stream rates, and choose how you release music: through a distributor that leaves you the master, or through a label that pays you a royalty. It then adds an optional songwriting (publishing) estimate and shows a total with a low–high range.

No service publishes a fixed per-stream rate. Payouts come from a share of each month’s revenue pool, so the money per stream moves with listeners’ countries, free vs paid plans and how much people stream overall. That is why every rate here is editable and the defaults are labelled as reported averages with their source and date.

How to use the Streaming Royalties Calculator

  1. Type your streams for each service. Add rows for other services, or remove the ones you do not use.
  2. Keep the default rates or enter the per-1,000-stream rates from your own distributor or label statements — the most accurate option.
  3. Pick I own my master and enter any distributor commission, or Signed to a label and enter your royalty rate and any advance still to recoup.
  4. Tick the publishing box if you wrote the song and set your share. Choose rupees, pounds or euros and type today’s exchange rate if you want local currency.
  5. Read the total and range, the step-by-step breakdown, and how many streams you would need for a target amount.

Editable rates per service

Each row has its own rate per 1,000 streams, with the per-stream equivalent beside it.

Uncertainty range

A ± band (25% by default — an assumption, not data) turns the estimate into a low–high range; set 0 for one figure.

Distributor or label

Distributor commission or label royalty rate, band splits and advance recoupment.

Songwriting share

An optional publishing estimate from the reported publishing-to-recording ratio, scaled by your share of the song.

Default rates and where they come from

Source: Duetti, “2024 Music Economics Report”, press release of 23 January 2025 — what artists and other master owners of independent releases received per 1,000 streams in 2024. These are recording (master) payouts, not the services’ total spend, and Duetti stresses they are averages across revenue types, not flat rates. Spotify disputed the study. Treat the defaults as a starting point and use your own statements whenever you can.

Where a stream’s money goes

  • Service → rights holders. The service keeps a share and pays the rest to rights holders by share of streams. In the UK in 2021, 53% of streaming revenue went to recording rights, 15% to publishing rights and 32% stayed with the services (CMA, Music and streaming market study, final report, 29 November 2022).
  • Recording side → you. A distributor passes on the payout minus any commission. A label pays you a royalty on its receipts; the CMA reports average royalty rates in major-label deals rising from 19.7% in 2012 to 23.3% in 2021. Until an advance is recouped, your share pays it back first.
  • Publishing side → songwriters. Songwriting royalties reach writers through publishers and collecting societies. The default 28.3% is the UK 2021 ratio 15 ÷ 53. In the US, the songwriter rate for on-demand streaming set by the Copyright Royalty Board (Phonorecords IV) is 15.1% of service revenue in 2023, rising to 15.35% in 2027.
  • Thresholds. Since April 2024, Spotify counts a track for recording royalties only after 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months (Spotify for Artists, “Track monetization eligibility”).

Worked example (defaults)

100,000 Spotify, 20,000 Apple Music, 10,000 Amazon Music, 15,000 YouTube and 5,000 other streams at the default rates make $601.05 of recording royalties. With your own master and 0% commission, that is all yours. Publishing at 28.3% adds $170.10 if you wrote the whole song, for $771.15 — between $578.36 and $963.93 with the ±25% band. On a 23.3% label royalty, the recording part would be $140.04 before recoupment. These are estimates for planning, not financial, legal or tax advice. Streaming Royalties Calculator FAQ

How do I use a streaming royalties calculator?

Enter your streams per service, check the rate for each, choose distributor or label, and read the total. For the best estimate, copy your real per-1,000-stream rates from a recent statement.

How much does a stream pay?

Reported 2024 averages to master owners ranged from about $3.00 per 1,000 streams on Spotify to $8.80 on Amazon Music — roughly $0.003 to $0.009 per stream. Your rate can be higher or lower.

How many streams does it take to make $1,000?

With the default rates, your own master and the whole song, about 195,000 streams. On a label deal, or with fewer rights, it takes far more — the calculator shows the number for your settings.

Why are the rates only estimates?

Services pay from a monthly revenue pool shared by stream counts, so the per-stream value changes with listener country, free vs paid plans, the month and your contracts. No major service publishes one fixed rate.

Do I get publishing royalties too?

Only if you wrote or co-wrote the song and are registered with a publisher or collecting society. Publishing is paid separately from recording royalties.

Is the result before tax?

Yes. Income tax and withholding depend on your country, so treat the figure as gross income.
