Where lorem ipsum comes from
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin taken from De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the Ends of Good and Evil”), a work of philosophy written by Marcus Tullius Cicero in 45 BC. The best-known passage, from sections 1.10.32–33, begins “Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…” — roughly, “nor is there anyone who loves pain for its own sake”. The standard placeholder starts mid-word with “lorem ipsum”, drops and alters words, and adds invented ones, so it is not readable Latin.
It is often claimed that printers have used the text since the 1500s, but there is no solid evidence for that. What is documented is that it became widespread in the 1960s through Letraset dry-transfer lettering sheets, and then in the 1980s through desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker, which shipped with it as sample text. Latin scholar Richard McClintock is credited with tracing the words back to Cicero.

Tips for using placeholder text well
- Match the real length. If headlines will be 60 characters, test with 60, not 20 — use the Character Counter to check. Short dummy text hides wrapping and overflow problems.
- Test long words and other languages. German compound words and Hindi or Arabic scripts break layouts that look fine in Latin filler.
- Never publish it. Pages that go live with lorem ipsum look unfinished to visitors and give search engines nothing useful to index. Search your site for “lorem” before launch.
- Prefer real content when you can. Placeholder text is ideal for layout, but decisions about headings, calls to action and accessibility are better made with the actual words.
