Flip video horizontally or vertically in seconds
Front cameras and webcams usually show you a mirror image while you record, and depending on the app and its settings the saved clip can stay mirrored — text reading backwards, a logo in reverse, a parting on the wrong side. This flip video tool mirrors the picture horizontally (left ↔ right) to put that right, vertically to turn it upside down, or both at once.
Flipping changes every frame, so the video is decoded and re-encoded in your browser using WebCodecs through Mediabunny, an open-source MPL-2.0 media library. The sound is kept, a preview shows the mirrored frame before you start, and the file never leaves your device.
How to use the Flip Video
- Drop the video on the upload area or click it to choose a file.
- Choose Horizontal · left ↔ right to un-mirror selfie or webcam footage, Vertical · upside down to flip it top to bottom, or Both.
- Check the preview — writing in the picture should now read normally — and move the frame slider to look at other moments.
- Pick the format and quality under “Save as”, then press “Flip video”. The progress bar shows how far it has got.
- Compare the Before and After players and press Download.
Flip Video features
Horizontal and vertical
Mirror left to right, top to bottom, or both — “Both” gives the same picture as a 180° turn.
Fixes mirrored text
Un-mirrors selfie, webcam and teleprompter recordings so writing, logos and screens read the right way round.
Rotation handled first
Phone clips with a rotation flag are turned upright before mirroring, so the result is mirrored the way you actually see it.
Flip baked into the pixels
Unlike a player’s mirror setting, the flip is part of every frame, so the video looks the same in every app and on every site.
Keeps the sound
Audio is carried over unchanged; for WebM output it is converted to Opus.
Local and free
No upload, sign-up or watermark — the work happens on your own device.
Flipping vs rotating
A flip is a mirror image: the left side becomes the right side, or the top becomes the bottom. A rotation turns the whole picture around its centre without mirroring it. That difference matters — a horizontal flip can never fix a sideways video, and no rotation can make backwards text readable. Use Rotate Video for footage lying on its side.
| Option | What happens | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal | Left and right swap; the top stays on top | Mirrored selfie and webcam recordings, backwards text |
| Vertical | Top and bottom swap; left stays on the left | Footage filmed via a mirror or a reflection, creative effects |
| Both | Left/right and top/bottom swap | The same picture as rotating 180° |
When mirrored footage needs fixing
- Selfie videos: some phones and apps save front-camera recordings exactly as the mirrored preview looked. Flip horizontally if a T-shirt slogan reads backwards.
- Webcam lessons and calls: many webcam apps mirror your image by default. A recorded lesson in which you point at a whiteboard is confusing until it is flipped back.
- Dance and fitness tutorials: some instructors deliberately publish a mirrored version so viewers can follow along like a mirror — flip makes either version from the other.
- Editing variety: a horizontally flipped shot can help a cut flow better in an edit; check first that no text, numbers or logos appear in it.
Quality and file size
Because every pixel moves, flipping always re-encodes the video. At the default “High” quality the result looks the same as the original to the eye; choose “Very high” for footage you will edit further. The file size can differ from the original because the encoder picks a bitrate to suit the frame size and codec. For a smaller file, choose a lower quality or shrink the frame afterwards with the video resizer; to turn a mirrored still into a correct one, use rotate and flip image.
Flip Video FAQ
How do I mirror a video?
Drop it on the page, keep “Horizontal · left ↔ right” selected, check that the preview looks right and press “Flip video”. Download the result when the progress bar reaches 100%.
Why are my selfie videos mirrored?
Front cameras show a mirrored preview because that feels natural, like looking in a mirror. Some apps and settings save the video that way too. Flipping it horizontally shows the scene as other people saw it.
Is flipping a video the same as rotating it 180 degrees?
Only when you flip both ways. A single horizontal or vertical flip produces a mirror image, which no rotation can create.
Does flipping reduce video quality?
The video is re-encoded once, which loses a little detail. At “High” or “Very high” quality the difference is not visible in normal viewing.
Can I flip a video on my iPhone or Android phone?
Yes, in a current browser. The flip runs on the phone itself, so long or 4K clips take longer — keep the screen on while it works.
Are my videos uploaded when I flip them?
No. The video is processed locally in your browser and never sent to a server.
